Avios Destinations

As we plan barbecues in parks and enjoy picnics in the sun, it's easy to forget that summer will be over too soon. And then it's onto gloomy and grey skies, when the UK starts serving drizzle and darkness at 4 pm. Winter makes long-haul travel feel like a public health measure, which is exactly why the most sensible way to get through it is to cash in those Avios and escape to sunnier shores.

British Airways Avios winter travel is one of the best uses of points in any collector's arsenal. Booking a reward flight can free up a great amount of money to spend where it counts: at the destination.

In this Avios redemption guide 2026, we've rounded up the best destinations for a winter getaway. If you're wondering about the best Avios routes for winter 2026, this is the list for you.

Why Winter Is the Best Time to Use Avios

There are two good reasons to use Avios in winter: the weather and the value.

Let's start with the obvious: the economic case for using Avios in winter. Long-haul cash fares to warm destinations spike over the Christmas and New Year period, and again across the February half-term window. However, Avios reward seats are priced in points, not in cash, which means each Avios point is worth more when fares are high.

The same applies to long-haul Avios Business Class travel. Avios redemptions in Club World deliver their best value in the winter, so if you've been sitting on a Companion Voucher, it's time to use it on these luxury Avios holiday destinations this winter:

Cancún, Mexico

Cancún.jpg

Best for: Winter sun, beaches and Caribbean relaxation

If you've been dreaming of sandy beaches and clear blue waters to drive away your winter gloom, chances are you're thinking of Cancun. When most of Europe is wrapped in coats and grey skies, Cancún is getting on with the business of sunshine, with temperatures of 26–30°C, turquoise water, and some of the most reliably blue winter skies in the Caribbean. The Hotel Zone's fourteen miles of white-sand beach is the obvious draw, lined with all-inclusive resorts, boutique hotels, long days by the water, and the satisfaction of being exactly as warm as you hoped you'd be.

Cancún is often dismissed as "just a beach destination," but there's so much to do once you've peeled yourself off the sun lounger. A short drive from the beach can take you from the resort to Riviera Maya, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen, as well as some of the most extraordinary Mayan archaeological sites in the world.

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichén Itzá is a two to three-hour drive away. Arriving early lets you beat both the crowds and the midday heat. The vast stone pyramids and temples are every bit as impressive as the photos suggest. Three UNESCO World Heritage sites within day-trip distance of the same beach resort are, by any measure, an exceptional return on a single flight.

Our Top Tips:

An off-peak Premium Economy return from London to Cancún costs 104,500 Avios plus £400 per person, while Business Class costs 198,000 Avios plus £499. BA flies direct from Heathrow, which makes Cancún one of the easiest Caribbean-region redemptions in the programme, so you don't have to go through the hassle of connecting flights and all that faff. Just ten hours and you're there.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape-Town.jpg

Best for: Sunshine, scenery, wildlife and outdoor adventure

The quickest cure for a British January may well be eleven hours south of Heathrow. While the UK is settling into another month of damp commutes and sunsets that seem to arrive before lunch, Cape Town is in the middle of summer, with temperatures regularly reaching the mid-to-high 20s°C. It's one of the most exceptional destinations in the British Airways Avios winter travel programme, in large part because the rand exchange rate makes everything from world-class restaurants to Winelands tastings feel absurdly good value for UK travellers.

The city's biggest appeal is the combination of experiences packed into a relatively small area, and the trick is realising how close everything is to everything else. You can take the cable car up Table Mountain in the morning, drive the Cape Peninsula to Cape Point in the afternoon, eat at a restaurant in Camps Bay as the Atlantic sun goes down, and wake up the next day in the Winelands. Combining a city break, a beach holiday and a wine trip would require multiple flights in many destinations. In Cape Town, it can all be done before dinner.

Our Top Tips:

  • Table Mountain dominates the skyline for a reason. The cable car is the easy option, but the views from the top are still worth every minute spent queueing.
  • The V&A Waterfront is touristy, but for good reason. It's one of the easiest places in the city to combine restaurants, harbour views and a sunset drink.
  • The penguins at Boulders Beach get all the attention, but the stretch of coastline between Simon's Town and Cape Point is just as memorable. Leave time for unplanned stops. The best views are often found between the attractions marked on the map.
  • You can spend an entire day swimming and sunbathing at Camps Bay and Clifton beaches, with the Twelve Apostles mountain range as a backdrop. No other beach city can match.
  • Cape Town's food scene has become one of the strongest in the Southern Hemisphere. The smartest strategy is to book one standout dinner and leave room for the places locals recommend on the day.

An off-peak Premium Economy return from London to Cape Town costs 104,500 Avios plus £400 per person. Business Class will set you back 198,000 Avios plus £499. BA Club Suite flights operate on select Cape Town services, and it's worth using the Club Suite Filter on Reward Flight Finder to identify which departures carry the newest cabin before you book.

Pattaya (via Bangkok), Thailand

Pattaya.jpg

Best for: Winter sun, beaches, nightlife and affordable long-haul escapes

This one's a no-brainer: fly into Bangkok, spend a few days in one of the most relentlessly entertaining cities on Earth, then transfer two hours down to Pattaya on the Gulf Coast. November to February is the best time for both: the rains are over, the skies are clear, and Pattaya's beaches are running at 28–32°C, with calm water and excellent underwater visibility.

Bangkok needs no introduction, but it does deserve a few days of your time. Most first-time visitors arrive with a checklist: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, a rooftop bar, maybe Chatuchak if it's the weekend. They're all worth seeing, but the city becomes more interesting once you stop trying to tick things off. Use at least one of the days wandering side streets, ducking into air-conditioned cafés when the heat becomes too much, and stumbling across a market or temple that wasn't in the guidebook. A longtail boat along the Chao Phraya River at dusk costs almost nothing and covers more ground than a taxi.

As for Pattaya, the biggest surprise is how much people miss by focusing only on its nightlife. Koh Larn's clear water, Jomtien's quieter shoreline and the astonishing Sanctuary of Truth make a strong case for looking beyond the stereotypes. And for those who want nightlife, Walking Street makes Pattaya's reputation for it entirely earned.

Our Top Tips:

  • Many locals head to Koh Larn when they want a break from Pattaya. The ferry takes around 45 minutes, and the water is noticeably clearer than anything you'll find along the city shoreline.
  • The Sanctuary of Truth sounds like a tourist attraction and looks like a fantasy novel come to life. More than forty years after construction began, craftsmen are still carving new details into the towering wooden structure.
  • Explore Nong Nooch Botanical Garden, 500 acres of themed gardens, cultural shows, and tropical plant collections, south of the city, easily combined with a beach day.
  • Pattaya's seafood restaurants are at their best in the evening. The places packed with Thai families are usually a safer bet than the ones covered in neon signs and promotional offers.

An off-peak Premium Economy return from London to Bangkok costs 110,000 Avios plus £450 per person, while Business Class costs 220,000 Avios plus £599. Thailand is reachable via British Airways directly or through Oneworld partners, including Qatar Airways, whose Qsuite is among the finest Business Class products in the sky and is bookable with Avios. High winter cash fares on Bangkok routes make this one of the better-value Avios routes in winter 2026 for anyone with a strong points balance.

The Maldives

Maldives.jpg

Best for: Overwater villas, diving, honeymooners, and total immersion in doing nothing

The Maldives is the answer to a simple question: what does the opposite of a British winter look like? The answer turns out to be 26 coral atolls with white sand, warm seas, temperatures of 27–30°C, and a horizon that rarely contains anything more stressful than a passing boat.

The dry season runs from November to April and brings with it calm seas, clear skies, and underwater visibility so good that snorkelling feels like swimming in an aquarium. That the water is also as warm as a bath is the cherry on top of your winter escape cake.

Each resort occupies its own island. There's no sharing a beach with the next hotel, no wandering between properties (and no reason to leave). It's easy to see why the Maldives remains a favourite for honeymooners and anyone in need of a complete reset.

Overwater villas with direct lagoon access are the accommodation of choice, available at most price points within the premium tier. The time difference from London is just five hours, manageable enough that jet lag is not the obstacle it can be on trips of this length.

Nobody goes to the Maldives once, so don't be disappointed if you feel like you're not fully done with the place after the trip; it's par for the course.

Our Top Tips:

An off-peak Premium Economy return from London to Malé costs 104,500 Avios plus £400 per person. Business Class is 198,000 Avios plus £499. The Maldives is one of the most popular luxury Avios holiday destinations in the BA programme, and winter reward flight availability moves quickly, so book as far ahead as possible and check for BA Club Suite flights using the Club Suite Filter on Reward Flight Finder if you're booking Business Class.

Banff and Lake Louise, Canada

Banff.jpg

Best for: World-class skiing, winter landscapes, hot springs and the most atmospheric mountain town in North America

Sometimes, true joy means accepting reality as it is and making the most of it. In this case, it means not every Avios winter trip needs to be about escaping the cold. Banff is the argument that you might as well go somewhere where the cold is actually enjoyable. The Canadian Rockies run at full dramatic capacity in winter: snow-covered peaks, frozen lakes, pine forests under white skies, and the town of Banff itself, atmospheric, cosy, full of good food, sitting at the foot of mountains that look like they've been borrowed from a film set.

The skiing case is strong on its own. The SkiBig3, made up of Lake Louise Ski Resort, Sunshine Village, and Mt. Norquay, all within Banff National Park, features over 300 runs across three resorts. The snow is the dry, light "champagne powder" that skiers travel specifically to find, and the season runs reliably from November into May. A single lift pass covers all three mountains and includes shuttles between them.

No worries if you're still developing your ski legs. The non-ski case is equally strong. Thirty minutes from town, Johnston Canyon transforms in winter into a narrow limestone gorge of frozen waterfalls and hanging icicles, navigable on guided ice walks with crampons. You can skate on Lake Louise with the Fairmont Château rising behind you and peaks on three sides. The Banff Upper Hot Springs sit you in 40°C thermal water while snow falls around you. This is a winter destination that actually takes advantage of winter.

Our Top Tips:

  • Lake Louise is at its most dramatic in winter, when the famous turquoise lake freezes over and becomes a natural skating rink surrounded by snow-covered peaks.
  • Walk the Johnston Canyon Icewalk, a guided trail through a frozen limestone gorge to two dramatic waterfalls. The Upper Falls are 2.5 kilometres in and worth every step.
  • Layering matters more than expensive gear. Temperatures can swing dramatically between a sunny afternoon and a clear evening, especially at higher elevations.
  • Spend a day soaking in the Banff Upper Hot Springs, outdoor thermal pools on Sulphur Mountain, with mountain views in every direction and an apres-ski vibe throughout.
  • Wildlife sightings are common, especially early in the morning. Elk regularly wander through Banff itself, often looking far more relaxed about the encounter than the tourists photographing them.

An off-peak Premium Economy return from London to Vancouver costs 104,500 Avios plus £400 per person and Business Class costs 198,000 Avios plus £499. A domestic flight of about 1 hour from Vancouver connects to Calgary Airport, from which Banff is a 90-minute drive along the Trans-Canada Highway. Calgary is the more convenient arrival airport for Banff, and flights from Vancouver are frequent.

A Note on Booking

airport-travels.jpg

All the Avios costs above are off-peak. Peak pricing applies over Christmas, New Year, and the February half-term, and reward seats cost more points. That said, even peak Avios pricing tends to compare favourably to equivalent cash fares in winter, which is precisely why British Airways Avios winter travel makes sense in this part of the calendar.

Use the Club Suite Filter on Reward Flight Finder before committing to Business Class bookings on any of these routes. Both Club World and BA Club Suite flights cost the same Avios, but the experience on a ten-to-twelve-hour overnight, with the door closed, a proper flat bed, and better storage, is completely different. Reward seat availability on popular winter routes moves quickly, so make sure to book as far ahead as possible, up to 355 days before departure.

Winter does not have to be endured. With the right allocation of Avios, it can be largely avoided.
