Tier Points are the currency British Airways uses to determine your
Executive Club status level. Unlike Avios, Tier Points cannot be spent and
they reset annually on your membership anniversary.

Do not expire as long as you collect or spend at least one Avios every 36 months

Key Takeaway

Think of Tier Points as the currency that determines your status and benefits, while Avios are the currency you actually spend on rewards.

Remember:

Tier Points reset annually, so you need to earn enough each year to maintain your status.

Tier Strategy Tips

Everything you need to know about how Tier Points work, how they’re earned, and how they help you unlock British Airways Club status.

How many British Airways Tier Points will I earn on a flight?

It depends on the cabin and route. Economy short-haul flights typically earn 75 Tier Points, while First Class long-haul earns up to 550 Tier Points. You can also earn extras by paying for seat selection or baggage.

Do I only earn BA Tier Points with British Airways?

Nope! You can earn Tier Points on flights with Oneworld partner airlines too—like Qatar Airways, Iberia, and American Airlines—just make sure your BA Executive Club number is added to the booking.

What is BA Tier Status?

Tier Status reflects your standing in the British Airways Club. The more Tier Points you earn, the higher your status—ranging from Bronze to Gold—with perks like lounge access, priority check-in, and extra baggage.

Can I Freeze my Tier Status?

Yes, in some cases. British Airways lets you request a Tier Status ‘freeze’ due to parental leave, serious illness, or life events. It’s not automatic—you’ll need to contact BA and provide some documentation.

BA Tier Status and corresponding Oneworld Status

Your BA status also gives you status with Oneworld. For example, BA Bronze = Oneworld Ruby, Silver = Sapphire, and Gold = Emerald. That means global benefits like access to partner lounges and priority services.

Confused About Tier Points?

Earning Avios is one thing — earning Tier Points for BA status is another. And here’s the catch: flights booked with Avios don’t earn Tier Points.

British Airways only awards Tier Points on cash bookings that meet specific criteria — like fare class, airline, and route.
