British Airways has recently announced the resumption of direct flights to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok after a four-year gap. The flights will resume from October 2024 and will reconnect passengers from London Gatwick to Bangkok three times a week. The announcement was made during a BA Showcase event held in London in which tickets were also made available, with cash and Avios redemption.

As the wings of BA Executive Club stretch back into these destinations, Avios collectors have every reason to get excited. In this blog, we’ll explore why these destinations should be on your travel list this year, and how to enjoy Avios redemption on your flights.

Why Kuala Lumpur?

Kuala Lumpur, or KL as it's affectionately known, is a quintessential stop for travellers exploring Southeast Asia. Its urban landscape is dotted with towering skyscrapers like the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and historic buildings that reflect its rich heritage. Whether you’re haggling in the neon-lit night markets or sipping a latte in a sleek café, Kuala Lumpur delivers an experience to remember.

Key Attractions:

  • Petronas Twin Towers: Standing at 452 metres, these towers are not only the tallest twin structures in the world but also a symbol of Malaysia’s ambitions and architectural ingenuity. A visit here provides breathtaking views from the Skybridge and the observation deck with a panoramic vista of the city’s skyline.
  • Street Markets: For an authentic local experience, the street markets of Kuala Lumpur are a must-visit. Places like Jalan Alor turn into food bazaars at night with everything from hawker stalls selling traditional dishes to seafood restaurants and dessert cafes.
  • Batu Caves: Located just outside the city, this series of limestone caves and cave temples is both a natural wonder and a religious site. The massive golden statue of Lord Murugan and the colourful steps leading to the caves make it a photographer's paradise, while the interior of the caves provides an escape filled with Hindu art and cultural performances.

Culinary Scene:

Kuala Lumpur’s food landscape is as diverse as its population, blending Malay, Chinese, and Indian culinary traditions into a mouth-watering range of dishes:

  • Nasi Lemak: Often considered Malaysia’s national dish, this fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf is commonly served with anchovies, peanuts, boiled egg, cucumber, and a spicy chili paste.
  • Satay: These skewered and grilled meats, typically chicken or beef, are marinated with local spices and served with a delicious side of rice
  • Char Kway Teow: A popular street food dish, this is a stir-fried noodle delight that combines flat rice noodles with shrimp, Chinese sausage, eggs, and bean sprouts, seasoned with chili, soy sauce, and sometimes a hint of belacan (shrimp paste). It’s known for its smoky, wok-hei flavour.
  • Roti Canai: This Indian-influenced flatbread is fluffy and crispy, often served with dhal (lentil curry) or curry sauce for dipping. It’s a staple in Malaysian cuisine, perfect for breakfast or as a snack any time of the day.

Why Bangkok?

Often referred to as the "City of Angels," Bangkok never fails to impress with its lively street life, intricate cultural landmarks, and the ever-present hum of activity. From tuk-tuks zipping through labyrinthine streets to monks in bright orange robes moving serenely through the chaos, the city’s energy is palpable.

Key Attractions:

  • The Grand Palace: This sprawling complex is the jewel in Bangkok's crown. Once the official residence of the Kings of Siam, the Grand Palace continues to awe visitors with its stunning architecture and intricate detail. Every corner tells a story, each more lavish than the last.
  • Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn): Standing majestically on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is famed for its towering spire, which soars 70 metres into the sky. Adorned with tiny pieces of coloured glass and Chinese porcelain, it sparkles magnificently in the sunlight.
  • Chatuchak Market: For a shopping experience like no other, Chatuchak Weekend Market is a must-visit with over 8,000 stalls covering 27 acres. It's a place where you can find everything from vintage clothing and antiques to live animals and delicious street food, all at bargain prices.

Culinary Delights:

Bangkok’s street food scene is legendary, and for good reason. The city's thoroughfares are lined with vendors who serve up some of the best Thai dishes you’ll ever taste.

  • Pad Thai: This quintessential Thai dish, made with stir-fried rice noodles, is a staple at nearly every food stall and comes packed with flavour, thanks to a combination of fish sauce, tamarind paste, and dried shrimp.
  • Tom Yum Goong: This hot and sour shrimp soup is a taste explosion in a bowl, with its combination of lemongrass, chili, galangal, lime leaves, shallots, lime juice, and fish sauce.
  • Mango Sticky Rice: A beloved Thai dessert, this simple yet delicious treat consists of sweet sticky rice paired with ripe mango slices and drizzled with creamy coconut milk. It's a refreshing and sweet end to any spicy meal.
  • Som Tum (Papaya Salad): This spicy salad made from shredded green papaya is tossed with tomatoes, carrots, peanuts, dried shrimp, runner beans, palm sugar, tamarind pulp, fish sauce, lime juice, and plenty of chili peppers, making it both refreshing and fiery.
