British Airways has announced plans to expand its long-haul winter 2026 network by adding two new destinations and increasing frequencies across several popular routes.
The airline will introduce flights to Melbourne and Colombo, while adding more services to destinations such as Cape Town, Tokyo Haneda, Barbados, Jamaica, and Costa Rica.
The changes amount to a 9% increase in BA’s long-haul capacity, with a clear push to give travellers more choice across leisure-heavy routes at a time when demand remains uneven and geopolitical factors continue to influence travel.
Flights to Melbourne

Flights to Melbourne will launch from London Heathrow on 9 January 2027, operating daily via Kuala Lumpur. The timing was deliberately chosen to align with major global events such as the Australian Open and the Melbourne Grand Prix.
Melbourne is Australia's cultural capital, known for its food scene and coffee culture. It’s also a good base for trips to the Great Ocean Road, the Grampians, and Victoria’s wine regions. It's a long-requested addition to the BA network and fills a gap for travellers looking beyond Sydney.
All four cabins will be available on the route, including First, which means it’ll be one of the BA Club Suite routes with full long-haul premium availability.
From an Avios perspective, flights to Melbourne fall into the same pricing band as Sydney. That means you can expect to pay around 55,000 Avios off-peak in Economy, and 159,500 Avios in Club World, with First Class redemptions sitting higher still. These are large numbers, but for a journey covering more than 17,000 kilometres, they remain competitive when compared with other redemption options.
The route via Kuala Lumpur also has another advantage. A stopover here could break up the journey and turn a long-haul flight into a two-part trip. Kuala Lumpur itself is well worth the pause, and adds flexibility that direct flights often don't.
Below are the flight details:
| Route | Flight number | Aircraft | Frequency | Departure | Arrival |
| LHR-KUL-MEL | BA33 | 787 | Daily From 9 Jan 2027 | 21:10 - 18:05+1 (LHR - KUL) | 19:45 - 06:40+1 (KUL - MEL) |
| MEL-KUL-LHR | BA34 | 787 | Daily From 11 Jan 2027 | 16:35 - 21:35 (MEL - KUL) | 23:15 - 05:20+1 (KUL - LHR) |
Colombo Returns to the Map

Sri Lanka has seen a steady recovery in tourism demand, and this route restores a direct connection to a destination known for its beaches, wildlife, and cultural history. The seasonal timing also positions it well for winter sun travel. Flights to Colombo will launch earlier, on 23 October 2026, with three weekly flights from London Gatwick operating through the winter season.
Customers will be able to choose from World Traveller, World Traveller Plus, and Club World cabins. While exact Avios pricing is yet to be confirmed, Colombo is expected to fall into the same band as destinations across the Indian subcontinent.
That keeps it in a range where Avios value is usually decent, especially when compared to long-haul routes that require higher balances. It’s a solid new option at a relatively accessible points level.
Here are the flight details:
| Route | Flight number | Aircraft | Frequency | Departure | Arrival |
| LGW-CMB | BA2045 | 777 | Mon/Wed/Fri From 23 Oct 2026 | 17:30 | 09:00+1 |
| CMB-LGW | BA2044 | 777 | Mon/Wed/Fri From 24 Oct 2026 | 11:00 | 17:00 |
Destinations Getting Increased Frequency
While the new routes are the headline, the real opportunity for Avios collectors is the increased frequency. More flights mean more reward seats, even if availability isn’t guaranteed. At least the odds become more favourable.
Cape Town is the one to watch. The route will increase to three daily services from December, a big jump for a destination that has historically been difficult to book with Avios. If you’re tracking BA Club Suite routes, this could become one of the more accessible long-haul redemptions if seats begin to open up.
Haneda, Tokyo, will move to double daily flights and continue through winter. It’s also much closer to central Tokyo, which makes it a lot easier than flying into Narita.
In the Caribbean, Barbados will see a new daily Gatwick service alongside the existing Heathrow route, with onward connections to Grenada, Guyana, and Tobago. St Lucia will also become a dedicated daily service. This extra winter capacity couldn’t come at a better moment for those planning around the best time to visit the Caribbean destinations, as increased winter capacity aligns with peak demand.

Kingston, Jamaica, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, will both increase to four weekly services, while San José, Costa Rica, will rise to five weekly flights and shift to Heathrow. Across the Atlantic, Baltimore will become daily, and Houston will increase to 12 flights per week. New Orleans will also see a small increase. These increases are worth watching closely on the BA Avios map as schedules open.
To recap, here is the full list of frequency additions for winter 2026

Short-Term Changes
In addition to the winter 2026 expansion, British Airways has already been adjusting capacity in response to short-term demand. Additional flights have been added to Bangkok and Singapore, with more than 3,300 extra seats introduced across a short window in March.
At the same time, services to parts of the Middle East remain reduced, with flights to destinations such as Amman, Bahrain, Dubai and Tel Aviv cancelled for a period, and Doha paused temporarily.
Search behaviour also reflects this. Demand for alternative leisure destinations has risen sharply, with interest in Antigua and Gran Canaria increasing. Caribbean routes continue to attract attention, which ties back to the expanded winter schedule.
What This Means for Avios Collectors
This expansion benefits Avios collectors at two levels. Firstly, new routes mean new opportunities. Flights to Melbourne provide access to a long-haul redemption that hasn't been available before, while Colombo flights are more accessible in terms of Avios required.
Secondly, the frequency increases may matter even more. More flights create more chances for reward seats to appear, especially on routes like Cape Town and Tokyo, where availability has been tight. If you regularly check the BA Flight Finder, these are the routes worth watching as new inventory is released.
Neil Chernoff, British Airways' Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, said, "We're delighted to announce sizeable growth to our flying schedule for winter 2026, including two notable new destinations that I'm confident will prove popular with our customers. We're also expanding services across several high-demand routes worldwide. Together, these changes represent a clear investment in our long-haul leisure network, adding even more options and choice for our customers.
"Elsewhere, we know there is short-term demand as a result of the situation in the Middle East. To support customers with alternative routes from popular destinations, we have already launched additional flights, and we will continue to monitor customer demand and add flights to our schedule if we're able to do so."
Final Thoughts
This is one of the more interesting long-haul updates from British Airways in recent years. Flights to Melbourne bring a long-requested destination into reach, while Colombo adds a well-timed seasonal option. At the same time, increased capacity across key routes creates more opportunities to find reward seats.
If you’re planning winter travel, now is the time to start watching the BA Flight Finder and mapping routes on the BA Avios map. As these flights begin to load, the best-value redemptions will not stay open for long.
