The line between Business and First Class is getting blurrier by the minute. While some airlines are phasing out First Class for pimped-out Business sections, British Airways is holding on to its First Class seats on plenty of routes.
In this blog, we’ve outlined the key differences between BA’s First and Business Class offerings. We’ve taken a look at not just the differences in service and amenities but also in cost for British Airways reward flights. Believe it or not, some First Class Avios reward flight redemptions can be cheaper than booking Business Class! More on that later.
An Overview of the British Airways Business Class
Seats
BA offers two types of Business Class: Club Europe and Club World. Club Europe caters to the European traveller and provides a 2-2 seat configuration, which means every passenger has either an aisle or window seat. The middle seat is left unoccupied, allowing extra elbow room and a sense of privacy. On the flip side, Club World ups the ante with fully enclosed private suites for long-haul flights. The design smartly incorporates a staggered seat arrangement for direct aisle access for every passenger and a substantial amount of personal space. The seat folds out into a fully flat bed, to help travellers sleep soundly, and has a larger than usual 18″-18.5″ HD in-flight entertainment screen (depending on the aircraft), as well as numerous device charging options. You can control everything relating to your seat and entertainment options using the handy touch screen.
Baggage Allowance
Both Business Class ticket options come with generous baggage allowances, accommodating both carry-on essentials and up to two checked bags. This convenience lets you pack without restrictions, ideal for those extended trips or bringing home more than just memories.
Dining
The dining experience in Business Class is nothing to scoff at either. Club Europe guests enjoy a hot meal service that reflects the destination's culinary culture. Club World travellers are treated to a three-course affair, complete with champagne. Snacks and additional beverages throughout the flight keep those hunger pangs at bay.
Entertainment
With a collection of movies, TV shows, and games at your seat back screen, flight boredom is a thing of the past. The selection gets a regular refresh so there’s always something new to watch or play.
Priority Services
Spend less time in lines and more time enjoying the lounge or arriving at your gate with ease. Priority check-in and boarding make the airport experience a breeze.
Lounge Life
Business Class lounge access means kicking back in style before take-off. Enjoy a quiet haven away from the airport chaos, complete with free snacks and drinks. Club Europe flyers get access to the Business Class lounge, while long-haul travellers can enjoy the perks of the First Class lounge.
The Not-So-Great Bits
No Wi-fi
Business Class doesn’t come with free Wi-Fi. In today’s connected world, that’s a bit of a let-down. Having to shell out extra for internet access feels like a missed opportunity for extra pampering. From April, all British Airways Executive Club members will have free access to text-based communication through online messaging platforms like WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and Teams Chat however, so that’s something at least.
Seat Space
Because of BA’s ongoing refurbishment of Club Suites across its fleet of Boeing 777s and A350-100s at Heathrow, travellers might experience some slight differences in seat space on newer vs older versions of Club World.
Travellers don’t get their own private suite, with fully closing doors in Club Europe (short haul Business Class), however, you can expect a contoured leather seat with a 76.2cm (30") seat pitch, which has been designed to maximise personal space and comfort.
If you’re flying in an older version of Club World (long haul Business Class) you’ll benefit from a fully reclining 6ft flat bed, whilst the newly refurbished Club World boasts 6ft 6inches (2m) length.
Those flying in First Class get the same bed space as the newly refurbished Club World suites - 6ft 6inches. However, they also get luxury bedding and Temperley London loungewear to seriously enhance their inflight chillout.
An Overview of the British Airways First Class
Baggage
In First Class, the world is your oyster, and you can pack as if it is. With an allowance for two carry-ons and the ability to check up to three bags, your travel wardrobe and essentials won't need any compromises.
Dining
The dining experience in First Class is nothing short of a culinary voyage. From the finest champagne to gourmet meals available on a Dine Anytime menu, every bite is a delight. The bar service complements this with an exquisite selection of spirits and wines.
In-Flight Entertainment & Connectivity
Entertainment options include the same selection as Business Class, but with the bonus of free Wi-Fi. First Class keeps you engaged and entertained with high-speed internet and the latest movies and music.
Lounge Access
Access to the First Class lounge sets a high bar for pre-flight relaxation. Passengers can enjoy gourmet dining with a la carte service and an extensive wine list curated by world-class sommeliers. Travellers also have access to quiet zones, spa facilities at select locations, and private cabanas in the Concorde Room at Heathrow for those wanting to work or rest before their flight.
Seats
First Class seating is an experience in privacy and personal space. The private suites with fully flat beds and wider seats allow you to stretch out and relax in your own secluded haven with luxurious bedding. First Class bedding takes comfort to new heights with a plush mattress topper, luxurious linens, and a sleep-inducing pillow.
Peace and Quiet
First Class enhances your relaxation with top-of-the-line noise-cancelling headphones. They ensure the rumble of the engines and the hum of the cabin fade away, leaving you in your serene bubble of entertainment or rest.
Comparing the Cost
Conventional wisdom might have you believe that First Class would burn through your points faster than you can say "luxury." But here’s where it gets interesting: sometimes, opting for First Class on Avios reward flights can be more cost-efficient than Business Class!
Let's take an example of a London to New York trip. If you book First Class for both legs of the journey, the cost is 160,000 British Airways Avios plus £852.90 in taxes and fees. But if you choose First Class for your outbound flight and Business Class for your return, the Avios requirement oddly increases to 170,000 plus the same £852.90 in taxes and fees! You're spending an extra 10,000 Avios compared to the all-First Class booking, which doesn't quite add up since you're downshifting to Business on one leg.
While this isn’t always the case, it's a good example of why travellers should keep an eye on the details and consider all options. It pays to do the maths and evaluate every route, as the usual hierarchy of cabin classes and their costs can sometimes flip in your favour.
The Verdict
British Airways Business Class packs a punch in terms of comfort, convenience, and those little luxuries that make flying a pleasure rather than a chore. On the other hand, First Class amps everything up a notch, with more personal space and extra perks that make a difference.
But with the Avios cost sometimes lower for First than Business, it pays to weigh your options. Who knows? Upgrading your British Airways reward flights might just be within reach, or even cheaper. Leveraging Avios wisely could unlock even greater luxury at a comparative or lower cost.
These anomalies in the Avios universe are exactly why you need to keep a close eye on Reward Flight Finder. By setting up alerts and being flexible with your travel plans, you could enjoy First Class for fewer British Airways Avios or only a little extra cash outlay than a Business Class ticket.
