The Art of First Class Redemptions with Avios

It’s not just about having enough points. It's about knowing where and how to redeem them effectively. With BA’s recent retirement of their iconic 14-seat Boeing 747 fleet in 2020, the landscape of First Class travel on the airline has changed. Now, most new planes have fewer or no First Class seats.

Moreover, not all routes offer the option of redeeming your Avios points for flights in First Class, and even if they do, there's no guarantee of a reward seat on every flight. Your best chance of getting a First Class seat now is on an A380 plane, which still features a 14 seat cabin. Below is a list of routes from London on which you can still redeem British Airways Avios for First Class flights on BA:

  • Abuja
  • Bahrain
  • Bermuda
  • Boston
  • Bridgetown
  • Chicago
  • Dallas
  • Dubai
  • Hong Kong
  • Houston
  • Johannesburg
  • Kuwait
  • Lagos
  • Los Angeles
  • Male (Maldives)
  • Mexico City
  • Miami
  • New York
  • Philadelphia
  • Riyadh
  • San Francisco
  • San Jose (California)
  • Santiago
  • Seattle
  • Singapore
  • Sydney
  • Vancouver
  • Washington DC

However, due to high competition and limited seat availability on these routes, securing those coveted seats through Avios can be a real challenge. Your best bet to land these seats is to use Reward Flight Finder. Our Calendar Search shows availability up to a year ahead, and by signing up and activating Alerts, you'll stay a step ahead with reward seat notifications.

One doesn't have to go far to find success stories. A recent traveller named Christopher recently gloated on Trustpilot about his First Class seat redemption using Reward Flight Finder: “Fantastic service. Against all the odds we managed to find flights to use our companion voucher for First Class seats on the dates we were looking for, all thanks to Reward Flight Finder Gold membership since we booked the moment the seats became free!”

Remember that you can also utilise the American Express 2-4-1 companion vouchers when booking a First Class seat with BA using Avios. This means you're flying two for the price of one. However, Barclays Upgrade Vouchers aren't valid for First Class - they're exclusive to Club World/Club Europe or World Traveller Plus.

London - Bermuda

Emerald waves crashing on pink sandy shores, Bermuda is where British charm meets Caribbean soul. A pastel-hued paradise, this island retreat reveals a labyrinth of underwater caves, historic forts, and the mystery of the infamous Bermuda Triangle. With its tranquil lanes lined with British colonial-era buildings and the rhythmic beats of calypso music in the background, every moment in Bermuda feels like a step into a postcard.

The beaches of Bermuda are a marvel in themselves, famous for their soft pink sands that contrast brilliantly with the azure waters. Perfect for sunbathing, snorkelling, or just letting the waves kiss your feet, these shores are a symbol of Bermuda's untouched beauty. According to Lauren on TripAdvisor, “the beach is truly something out of a travel magazine photograph... absolutely stunning. Make sure to take lots of pictures, the beach is something you will never want to forget!”

A round trip in First Class during off-peak times for one person costs 136,000 Avios and between £600-£800. With the right American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher, two people can travel for this same amount of Avios and a cash cost of £1200- £1600. Buying tickets from BA's website for one person on these off-peak times in 2024 costs about £6400 including all taxes. So, by using Avios and the cash fee, you can save up to £4000. If two people travel using a Companion Voucher, the savings is around £8000 compared to the regular price.

London - Los Angeles

A city painted with Hollywood stars and sunlit boulevards. Here, skyscrapers and mountains coexist, diners serve both starlets and dreamers, and every street could be the backdrop of your next favourite film. But beyond the glitz of Hollywood, you can walk around and discover neighbourhoods from the historic Boyle Heights to the vibrant Koreatown. Walk through indie bookshops in Silver Lake, then find yourself amidst Venice's unique canal-inspired streetscapes. Taste the global palate of LA, where taco trucks, upscale bistros, and hole-in-the-wall gems compete for your culinary affection. As sunset paints the city, join the locals at Griffith Observatory, watching as stars emerge not just in the sky but also, perhaps, right next to you.

According to Maddison on TripAdvisor, Downtown Disney encapsulates the charm and wonder of LA: “Downtown Disney is a mecca of food and entertainment geared toward adults. From an interactive theme park and dino-dining, to Wolfgang Puck's cuisine and cocktails - plus golf courses and even a spa - there is literally no end to what you can do, buy, see, and eat.”

For those eyeing the luxury of a First Class experience in this dreamland, off-peak round trips will cost you 170,000 Avios and a cash payment ranging from £600-£800. Fortunate holders of the American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher can embark on this journey with a partner at no extra Avios cost. A quick comparison with BA's 2024 off-peak prices, which stand at roughly £6300 for one person making a return trip off-peak, reveals that using Avios can save you up to £3900. Opting to utilise a British Airways Companion Voucher? Well, your savings doubled, mounting up to £7800 compared to the standard fare.

Explore the alleys of the Old City and discover hidden treasures in its bustling bazaars, from fragrant teas to silk embroideries. The Yuyuan Garden offers a relaxing retreat amidst the urban frenzy, with its koi-filled ponds and classical pavilions providing a calming backdrop for contemplation. Hop on a river cruise along the Huangpu and be captivated by Shanghai's skyline. For a taste of the city’s burgeoning arts scene, the M50 Art District is a must-visit. Once a dilapidated factory area, it's now a thriving hub of galleries, studios, and cafes, showcasing the city's creative spirit.

The Broke Backpacker captures a slice of this magic: “When visiting Shanghai, you absolutely must take a stroll along the Bund, especially at night, when the buildings across the river are lit up in a dazzling array of colours. You can duck into the many boutiques and galleries along the way. And when you get hungry, pick a restaurant that looks busy and head in.”

Off-peak First Class return seats cost 102,000 Avios and an additional £600-£800 in cash. If you’re in possession of the American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher, that means two of you can enjoy the luxury of First Class for the price of one lot of Avios points and two lots of taxes.. A glance at the BA website shows off-peak return 2024 cash tickets for one person priced around £4400. This translates to an impressive saving of roughly £2800, a number that doubles to around £5600 if you're using the British Airways Companion Voucher.
