If you’re new to the world of British Airways Avios, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about BA reward flights – what they are, how to find and book them, and how to get the most value from your Avios points. We’ll cover the basics in a friendly, step-by-step way, from understanding Avios (British Airways’ travel rewards currency) to using Reward Flight Finder (RFF) tool to snag those hard-to-find seats.

By the end, you’ll be ready to book Avios reward flights like a pro and unlock amazing travel experiences with your points!

What Is a British Airways Reward Flight?

Put simply, a BA Reward Flight is a flight booked using Avios points instead of paying the full cash fare. These flights are made possible through Reward Seats —  In other words, you’re using the points you’ve collected (plus a cash amount for taxes and fees) to secure a seat that’s set aside for loyalty members, rather than paying the standard ticket price.

To ensure availability, British Airways guarantees a minimum number of reward seats on every flight. The number depends on whether the route is short-haul or long-haul:

  • Short-haul flights (Euro Traveller & Club Europe)

    • 8 Euro Traveller (economy) seats
    • 4 Club Europe (business) seats

  • Long-haul flights (World Traveller, World Traveller Plus, Club World)

    • 8 World Traveller (economy) seats
    • 2 World Traveller Plus (premium economy) seats
    • 4 Club World (business class) seats

These guaranteed seats form the base availability, but British Airways may release additional seats closer to departure depending on demand and booking patterns.

British Airways refers to these as “Reward Flights,” but you might also hear people call them award flights or Avios reward flights – they mean the same thing. The key idea is that your Avios points become the main currency for the flight.

How does a reward flight differ from a paid flight?

British Airways guarantees a minimum number of Avios seats on every flight (more on that later). But once those seats are taken, you’ll need to find alternative dates or hope BA release more later.

  • When booking a reward flight, you’ll only pay cash for taxes, fees, and carrier charges, while Avios cover the base fare.
  • In many cases this means you could pay as little as £1 in cash (depending on route/class) plus the required Avios points.
  • Reward flights are capacity-controlled – airlines guarantee a number of seats available to book with points on each flight, however, they can add more whenever they wish - depending on how many cash bookings there are at any time.

Also, keep in mind that reward flight bookings do not earn additional Avios or tier points. Plus, Bronze-tier members get priority access to extra Avios seats – find out exactly what that entails in our full Bronze Tier guide.

However, BA does allow changes or cancellations of reward bookings for a relatively small fee (currently £35 per person), up to 24 hours before departure.

In summary:

  • A BA Reward Flight lets you use your Avios points to cover the base fare of your flight
  • You only pay cash for taxes, fees, and carrier charges
  • BA guarantees a minimum number of reward seats on every flight (short-haul and long-haul)
  • You get more flexibility than most cash fares, including the ability to change or cancel for a small fee
  • Availability is limited and capacity-controlled, so flexibility with travel dates increases your chances

How Reward Flight Availability Works

Booking BA reward flights successfully is all about understanding availability – when and how those Avios seats are released.

Alisha actually breaks down the timeline in her FAQ—learn how early to set booking reminders and what ‘peak’ versus ‘off‑peak’ really means.”

BA guarantees at least:

Short-haul flights:

  • 8 economy seats (Euro Traveller)
  • 4 business class seats (Club Europe)

Long-haul flights (from Heathrow or Gatwick):

  • 8 economy seats (World Traveller)
  • 2 premium economy seats (World Traveller Plus)
  • 4 business class seats (Club World / Club Suite)

Shorter flights from London City have a minimum of 2 seats in each class.

Tips for Booking

  • Set an Alert or calendar reminder for 355 days out if you're targeting peak times
  • Check back regularly – new seats are often released closer to departure if unsold
  • Be flexible with dates, routes, or cabin class to increase your chances

Even when those initial seats sell out, BA may release more based on booking patterns and cancellations.

Understanding Avios Points (BA Reward Currency)

Avios (pronounced "av-ee-oss") are the loyalty points you earn and redeem through British Airways and other IAG airlines.

Collecting Avios

You can collect Avios by:

  • Flying on British Airways or Oneworld partner airlines
  • Booking with BA Holidays (flight + hotel or car packages often earn bonus Avios)
  • Using a British Airways American Express credit card - British Airways American Express® Credit Card or British Airways American Express® Premium Plus Card.
  • Spending with a Barclaycard Avios credit card
  • Opening a Barclays Premier bank account
  • Booking hotels or car rentals through Avios partners
  • Staying with Airbnb (via partner offers when available)
  • Taking rides with Uber (linked via the Avios app or special promotions)
  • Shopping online via the BA eStore (thousands of retailers)
  • Converting points from other loyalty schemes into Avios (for example, Nectar points, American Express Membership Rewards, Heathrow Rewards points, BPme Rewards, and select hotel programmes like Marriott Bonvoy or IHG One Rewards)

Some travellers earn tens of thousands of Avios a year without ever stepping on a plane, thanks to smart spending and generous credit card sign-up bonuses.

Spending/Redeeming Avios

Avios can be redeemed for:

But reward flights generally offer the best value.

Avios expire after 36 months of inactivity, but any earning or spending resets the clock. Got a big redemption coming up but short a few points? Learn how to purchase Avios wisely to fill the gap.

Using Avios Beyond BA: The Oneworld Alliance

One of the most powerful features of Avios is that you can redeem them across all of BA’s partner airlines:

Oneworld partners:

  • British Airways
  • American Airlines
  • Qatar Airways
  • Japan Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Qantas
  • Finnair
  • Iberia
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Royal Air Maroc
  • Royal Jordanian
  • SriLankan Airlines
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Fiji Airways

You can book many of these flights directly on the BA website, although some (like Aer Lingus or Alaska Airlines) may require calling BA to complete the booking.

Using Avios on partner airlines often results in lower cash surcharges than with BA, making it great value.

Once you understand Reward Flight basics, here’s how to get even more out of your points:

1. Use a BA Companion Voucher

If you hold a BA Amex card, you can earn a Companion Voucher after hitting a spending threshold. It lets you book two tickets for the Avios price of one (excluding fees and taxes).

  • Valid on BA flights only
  • Best value for Business & First Class: The reason you get such great value is because reward pricing in Avios is far more reasonable than cash fares at the front of the plane. For example, Business Class typically costs around 3× the Avios of an Economy seat, and First Class around 4×.

In contrast, cash prices for Business and First can be 10–20× higher than Economy. This makes redemptions in premium cabins one of the most efficient uses of Avios.

  • Can also be used solo for 50% Avios discount

2. Upgrade with Avios

Buy a cash ticket in one class and upgrade using Avios – especially handy when sales are on.

3. Use a Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher

If you have a Barclaycard Avios or Avios Plus credit card, you can earn an Upgrade Voucher after meeting the annual spending target. This voucher allows you to upgrade a flight by one cabin class (e.g. from Economy to Premium Economy) when booking with Avios.

  • Available for solo or companion use
  • Valid on BA flights only
  • Can be a cost-effective way to enjoy premium cabins. Learn how to use the Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher.

4. Pool Avios with family

A Household Account lets you combine balances with up to 6 others living at your address.

  1. Collect transferable points if you use other loyalty schemes

If you collect points from other schemes, choose points that can be transferred into Avios, such as Nectar points or American Express Membership Rewards points.
