Booking a family trip using Avios can feel a bit like solving a puzzle. You need enough reward seats for everyone, you’re trying to stretch your Avios as far as possible, and once you start looking at premium cabins, the numbers can get eye-watering quickly.
The Barclaycard Avios Upgrade Voucher can give you a bit of breathing room. If you hold an eligible Barclaycard credit card and meet the annual spend target, you’ll earn a voucher that lets you move up one cabin class on a British Airways Avios booking, without having to pay the full Avios cost for the upgrade.
In this article, we’ll walk you through exactly how the Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher works, how to earn it, and how families can use it to maximise value on long-haul trips, even when travelling with kids.
What is the Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher?

The Barclaycard Avios Upgrade Voucher lets you upgrade a British Airways Avios booking by one cabin class. You can use it in one of two ways:
- Upgrade one return Avios booking for one person, or
- Upgrade two one-way Avios bookings for two people.
In other words, you’re not getting a completely free flight but paying Avios for a lower cabin and enjoying the higher cabin experience. That makes it an excellent tool for getting into Premium Economy or Business Class without burning through quite so many Avios.
And if both adults in your household have their own Barclaycard Avios Plus cards, you can each earn a voucher. That gives your family two vouchers to work with, making it much easier to piece together those reward seats for everyone.
A few points to note:
- The voucher can’t be used to upgrade to First Class. It only allows you to move up one cabin, and Business Class is the highest eligible cabin.
- You can only use the Upgrade Voucher on Avios bookings. It can’t be applied to cash tickets.
- When using your Upgrade Voucher, you’ll need to check availability in the cabin you want to fly in, not the one you’re booking. For example, if you’re booking a long-haul flight in World Traveller Plus and plan to upgrade to Club World, you’ll need to make sure there’s Club World reward seat availability for your dates.
- Vouchers can only be used on British Airways flights booked with Avios, not on partner airlines.
How to Earn a Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher
You can earn a Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher with either the Barclaycard Avios card (free) or the Barclaycard Avios Plus card (£20/month) if you have British Airways membership and are the main cardholder of the card.
You’ll need to hit the required spending within a 12-month period, which resets each year on the anniversary of opening your card account. The spending requirement and benefits differ slightly depending on which Barclaycard credit card you hold:
- Barclaycard Avios (no monthly fee): Spend £20,000 on your card within 12 months to receive an Upgrade Voucher (or alternatively choose 7,000 bonus Avios instead).
- Barclaycard Avios Plus (£20/month): Spend £10,000 on your card within 12 months to receive an Upgrade Voucher (or 7,000 bonus Avios instead).
Once you’ve earned your voucher, it’s valid for two years from issue, which should give you plenty of time to plan your trip.
How does the Upgrade Voucher work for families?

Each voucher allows you to upgrade one return flight for one person or two one-way flights for two people. So, if you’ve earned one voucher, you could:
- Use it to upgrade Mum (or Dad) on a return trip, or
- Use it to upgrade both parents (or one parent and one child) on a one-way flight.
Now, if both adults in the family hold a Barclaycard Avios Plus card and have earned a voucher each, you effectively double your options. With two vouchers, you could:
- Upgrade two return tickets (for example, both parents travelling in a higher cabin), or
- Upgrade four one-way tickets, which could cover the whole family on one leg of the trip.
Vouchers cannot be combined on a single ticket, but multiple vouchers in a household can be used for separate tickets in the same booking. Of course, you’ll still need to have enough Avios to cover the base fare (in the cabin you originally booked), but the vouchers help you access the better cabin without paying the full Avios price for that upgrade.
Premium Economy vs Business Class: Where do you get the best value?
For the best value, we recommend using the voucher on long-haul upgrades from Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus) to Business Class (Club World). Some routes where you’ll get outstanding value include Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Singapore, and Sydney. That’s where you see the highest savings on Avios and the biggest jump in comfort, considering value per Avios spend.
For families, we recommend destinations such as Orlando, Cancun, Mauritius, Grenada, New York, and even Singapore, routes with plenty of family appeal where you can enjoy the comfort of Business Class without burning through your entire Avios balance. For example, a peak season Business Class return to New York typically saves around 40,000 Avios using the voucher. If you value your Avios at 1p each, that’s about a £400 saving. If you’re valuing Avios at Nectar point conversion rates (0.8p), that’s around £320.
In perfect conditions, for example, on a Zone 9 off-peak return, the voucher can save you as much as 120,000 Avios on a single Business Class ticket. But for most families, realistic savings are typically in the 40,000 to 110,000 Avios range, depending on route, season, and cabin availability.
Keep in mind: Part of the extra cash you pay when upgrading comes from higher taxes in premium cabins. For example, long-haul Air Passenger Duty jumps from £26 in Economy to £185 in Premium Economy and even higher when you move into Business Class. That’s why the cash difference isn’t just the fare; the taxes also grow.
Let’s run through a couple of real-world examples:
Singapore
An off-peak Premium Economy return for one person from London to Singapore costs 110,000 Avios plus £455. Business Class for the same flight would normally cost 220,000 Avios plus £625. By using one Upgrade Voucher, you pay the lower Premium Economy Avios price and fly in Business Class. That’s a saving of 110,000 Avios. If you value Avios at 1p each, that’s a saving of £1,100.
Mauritius
An off-peak Premium Economy return for one person between London and Mauritius costs 100,000 Avios plus £405. Business Class would require 200,000 Avios plus £575. With the Upgrade Voucher, you save 100,000 Avios. At 1p per Avios, that’s a saving of £1,000.
Now let’s see how this works for a family of four:
Using One Voucher:
If you’re a family of four flying to Mauritius off-peak, booking four Business Class seats usually costs 800,000 Avios and £2,300 in cash. Using one Upgrade Voucher, you could book three seats in Business Class and one in Premium Economy instead (which would get upgraded to Business Class due to the voucher), bringing the total down to 700,000 Avios and £2,300. That means you’re saving 100,000 Avios, or £1,000 in total, if you value Avios at 1p each.
Using Two Vouchers:
If you have two Upgrade Vouchers, the savings get even bigger. Booking four Business Class seats to Mauritius off-peak would usually cost 800,000 Avios and £2,300 in cash. But with two vouchers, you can upgrade two people to Business Class while booking the other two in Premium Economy (which would get upgraded to Business Class). That brings the total down to 600,000 Avios and £2,300. That saves 200,000 Avios, or £2,000 overall, if you value Avios at 1p each.
What if Business Class isn’t available or not suitable for kids?

While Business Class is where the biggest savings sit, it isn’t always the most practical option for every family. For starters, long-haul Business Class redemptions are hugely popular and seats can be snapped up quickly, especially if you're trying to secure multiple seats for a whole family. Even with tools like Reward Flight Finder (RFF) Alerts, availability for four Club World seats can be tricky to find.
Then there’s the simple reality of travelling with younger children. Not everyone wants to splash out on a BA Club Suite for a toddler who’ll happily sleep across a Premium Economy seat anyway. In those cases, Premium Economy can feel like a much better balance of space, comfort, and value.
So, instead of Premium Economy to Business upgrades, you can use your voucher to move from Economy into Premium Economy, which can still make a huge difference on long-haul flights with kids.
For example:
Tampa:
If you’re a family of four flying to Tampa off-peak in Premium Economy, booking four seats would usually cost 380,000 Avios and £1,420 in cash. Using one Upgrade Voucher, you could upgrade one person from Economy to Premium Economy, bringing the total down to 345,000 Avios and £1,420. That’s a saving of 35,000 Avios, or £350 in total.
If you have two Upgrade Vouchers, the savings increase further. Booking four Premium Economy seats would normally cost 380,000 Avios and £1,420. However, with two vouchers applied, two people can upgrade from Economy to Premium Economy, bringing the total down to 310,000 Avios and £1,420. That works out to a saving of 70,000 Avios, with a cash value (using our 1p per 1 Avios rule) £700 overall.
Destinations like Dubai, Grenada, New York and Tampa work really well for these Economy to Premium Economy upgrades, especially if you’re focused on getting more comfort for the kids without burning huge amounts of Avios.
In short: even if you’re not going all-in for Business Class, the Upgrade Voucher can still take the edge off those long flights and make family travel that little bit more enjoyable while still saving you plenty.
Key tips for families

Using the Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher as a family definitely requires a bit of strategy. Here are some simple tips to help you squeeze the most value out of your vouchers:
Book early for the best availability:
Business Class reward seats go quickly, especially if you need multiple seats for a family trip. Be ready to pounce as soon as your booking window opens (355 days before departure) in your BA Avios account.
Be flexible with dates and destinations:
Off-peak dates deliver bigger Avios savings, and certain destinations release more reward seats than others. If you can be flexible on your travel dates or where you're going, you’ll increase your chances of finding availability.
Mix and match cabins if needed:
If you can’t secure four Business Class seats, consider upgrading just part of the family or splitting cabins. Mum and Dad in Business while the kids enjoy Premium Economy might still be a better overall experience than everyone in Economy.
Use RFF tools:
RFF Alerts can give you a head start when new reward seats open up and save you hours of manually searching. Especially useful if you're chasing multiple Business Class seats.
Don’t forget the cash savings:
The Upgrade Voucher not only saves you Avios, it also often reduces the total cash cost of your booking, once you factor in the lower taxes and surcharges associated with paying for a lower cabin but flying in a higher one.
Earn two vouchers if you can:
If both adults have British Airways membership and their own Barclaycard Avios Plus cards, earning two vouchers per year can make a big difference to your family travel plans. It gives you more flexibility when booking and opens up bigger savings.
Travel off-peak for the best savings:
Take New York as an example. With the voucher, off-peak Club World return flights cost 52,000 Avios, saving you 48,000 points, while peak dates cost 80,000 Avios, saving you 40,000 points.
Is the Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher worth it for families?

In short: yes, but there are some things to consider.
The Barclaycard Upgrade Voucher can be extremely valuable for families if you want to make your Avios go further while enjoying a more comfortable flying experience. Used smartly, it can save you tens of thousands of Avios (and a fair bit of cash) on long-haul trips where Premium Economy and Business Class seats make a real difference to comfort, especially with younger kids in tow.
While the Avios savings are great, many families find the biggest benefit is simply upgrading the travel experience. Perks like lounge access, fully flat beds, or more space to handle the kids can turn a long-haul flight from something to endure into something to enjoy.
In short, the real value kicks in when:
- You’re flying long-haul.
- You want to upgrade Premium Economy to Business.
- You’ve earned two vouchers between two adults.
- You can book early enough to secure the reward seats.
Even if you can’t always make Business Class work, using the voucher to move from Economy to Premium Economy gives you meaningful savings and makes those longer flights much more manageable for the whole family.
As always with Avios bookings, a little flexibility, forward planning, and creative thinking can help you unlock the full potential of the vouchers and turn those family holiday dreams into reality for a lot less than you might expect.
