When you’re planning to travel the world, every single minute counts. Nobody likes being late, especially when travelling brings its own set of stresses. While we can't account for everything, a reliable flight that increases the likelihood of a smooth connection can go a long way in easing this anxiety.
On 2nd January this year, Cirium released its 16th annual list of 2024’s most on-time airlines and airports in the world. The rankings are broken down according to region and the size of the airport or the airline. The number of passengers that fly via the airline in a year determines its size. Drawing from over 600 sources and processing 25 million daily records, this report identifies the airlines most likely to get you to your destination — and your next flight — right on schedule. Flights must arrive within 14 minutes and 59 seconds of their planned arrival time to qualify as on-time.
The list is an invaluable source of insights for travellers planning trips in 2025. Let's find out if your favourite airlines made the cut.
Most Punctual Airlines in 2024
In 2024, Aeroméxico clinched the top position for being the most punctual airline in the world. According to data from Cirium, approximately 87% of Aeroméxico's flights landed on time. Aeroméxico's punctuality rate of 86.7% placed it above Saudia, which came in second with a rate of 86.35%. Delta Air Lines, with an overall punctuality rate of 83.46%, came in third despite significant disruptions from the CrowdStrike IT outage in July.

Delta Airlines also received an award for its global operational excellence. Several factors went into the decision such as the network complexity, flight volume and how Delta Airlines was able to keep the impact of flight disruptions on passengers as minimal as possible. The airline won the Cirium Platinum Award for the fourth year in a row.
Copa Airlines claimed the top spot in South America with an 88.22% on-time arrival rate. The airline has consistently maintained its position as the most reliable airline in the region for over ten years. Caribbean Airlines and Aeroméxico are also strong contenders, trailing closely behind. United Airlines captured the second spot in North America with an 80.93% punctuality rate, with Alaska Airlines close at 79.25%.
In Europe, Iberia and its budget counterpart, Iberia Express, topped the charts with rates of 81.58% and 84.69%, respectively. They were closely followed by Scandinavian Airlines and Vueling. Virgin Atlantic was the highest-ranking UK-based airline, achieving a punctuality rate of 74.01%. However, no UK carriers ranked in the top 10 across Europe this year.
British Airways flights appeared on the list of European airlines with the highest number of cancellations in 2024. According to the data compiled for 2024, 7,117 of the 310,631 British Airways flights were cancelled last year. This was the second-highest figure for airlines in Europe after Lufthansa, which had 12,220 of 419,682 flights cancelled. Third was easyJet, which had 5,783 cancellations among 587,574 flights.
In the Asia-Pacific sector, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways were closely matched in punctuality. Meanwhile, in the Middle East and Africa, FlySafair led the pack as the most on-time airline, boasting a punctuality rate of 93.82%. The region was also the most unpredictable one in terms of flight cancellations. Out of a total of 12,489,263 flights in the Asia-Pacific sector in 2024, 315,317 flights were eventually cancelled.
Most Punctual Airports
It's not just the airlines that determine whether a flight takes off on time. Airport efficiency also influences overall punctuality. According to data for 2024, King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh topped the global rankings with 86.56% of flights departing on schedule, outperforming Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima and Benito Juarez Airport in Mexico City.
Among medium-sized airports, Panama Tocumen International Airport (PTY), Osaka Itami International Airport (ITM), and Brasilia International Airport (BSB) ranked as the top three in punctuality. In the category of small airports, the leaders were Guayaquil Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport (GYE), Quito Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO), and El Salvador International Airport (SAL).
In a new move, Cirium also introduced the Platinum Award for airports in 2024. El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, Colombia, became the first airport to receive this award. The benchmark for this award was based on an exhaustive list that factored variables such as disruption duration, passenger impact, operational complexity, and the airport's overall appeal.
“A Difficult Year for Airlines”
Jeremy Bowen, CEO of Cirium, said, "In an industry defined by operational complexity, we are extremely proud to be celebrating the airlines and airports that provided customers with the most on-time flights and best performance in 2024, acknowledging their operational excellence. 2024 was a difficult year for airlines, facing a large-scale IT outage and unseasonable and severe weather patterns. Despite these challenges, these airlines and airports have worked tirelessly to ensure their customers have a smooth journey and reach their destination on time."
Final Thoughts
Most airlines that improved their rankings owed their success to being punctual. Airlines such as Delta that were able to motivate their staff to achieve operational objectives reaped the rewards. In the end, customers will always prefer an airline that’s on time. Thus, when it comes to deciding between customer satisfaction and profitability, punctuality is the deciding factor, as shown by Aeroméxico.
While the information provided is helpful, it's important to keep some things in mind when making a decision based on rankings alone. Flight delays and disruptions can be caused by a number of events, both expected and unforeseen. Some of these can be avoided, as shown by airlines that have improved their rankings through operational efficiencies. However, there are sometimes events that are beyond the control of airlines and airports, such as weather conditions.
So, the next time you plan to travel the world, look at the flight checker and pick the airline with the highest likelihood of getting you to your destination without wasting your precious time.
