The new British Airways World Traveller Plus seat – Take a Look

Last Updated: 09 Nov 2025

News

Good news travels fast, and that’s absolutely true in British Airways’ case, which was trying to roll out an updated World Traveller Plus cabin on the down-lo. But once word got out, it was hard to keep the excitement under control, and the news started making waves before an official announcement from the airline. The new BA Premium Economy seat was revealed not in a press release, but through a series of LinkedIn posts by BA staff. The posts show the first refurbished Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner at the airline’s maintenance site in Cardiff.

It looks like this is another aspect of BA’s broader £7 billion transformation plan, which includes new cabins, upgraded lounges, and its next-generation Club Suite for Business Class.

In this blog, we take a closer look at what’s changing in Premium Economy in British Airways and what it could mean for travellers planning to book BA reward flights.

An Overview of the Changes

The first refurbished 787-9 aircraft features a refreshed World Traveller Plus cabin, complete with a darker, sleeker design. The biggest visual upgrade is the new winged headrest, a subtle improvement that provides more comfort and privacy, especially on overnight routes.

The new cabin keeps the familiar 2-3-2 layout, but the look and feel are noticeably better. Each seat now features a black leather headrest accented with fine contrast stitching, set against deep navy upholstery that gives the cabin a more contemporary tone. The seat shells have been updated in a light grey finish, complemented by darker armrests that create a clean, modern contrast. Even the side pocket has been redesigned to provide more practical storage for personal items during flights.

While this isn’t a complete redesign, it’s a welcome update that modernises the look and feel of BA Premium Economy, bringing it closer in line with competitors like Virgin Atlantic and KLM. Economy has also received a minor refresh, with darker seat covers visible in photos shared from BA’s Cardiff facility.

Certification and Rollout

The 787-9 aircraft has been parked at Cardiff Airport since late July for refurbishment. Because it’s the first of its kind to be completed, it requires a longer certification process involving the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Once that’s done, the rest of the 787-9 fleet will likely follow at a faster pace.

British Airways hasn’t issued a formal statement yet. However, the quiet reveal suggests that the rollout is close, which is good news for anyone eyeing BA reward flights or considering an upgrade.

A Closer Look at the Cabin

British Airways hasn’t confirmed the exact seat model, but industry experts believe it’s the Recaro R5 from the manufacturer’s “comfort” line. This would be a natural evolution, as Recaro already supplies BA’s current Premium Economy seats. The new design appears to retain the same seatback screen size, around 12 to 13 inches, which is smaller than the 15.6-inch displays now found on newer competitors. While Bluetooth connectivity hasn’t been confirmed, many travellers will be hoping it’s included in this round of updates.

What You Can Expect in World Traveller Plus

For those unfamiliar with Premium Economy in British Airways, the World Traveller Plus cabin bridges the gap between Economy and Business Class. It’s a quieter, smaller cabin with a handful of key perks:

  • Wider seats with extra legroom, lumbar support, and greater recline
  • Two full meals, a glass of sparkling wine, and complimentary bar service
  • Personal in-flight entertainment with noise-cancelling headphones
  • A sustainable amenity kit made from recycled plastic bottles
  • In-seat power, larger baggage allowance, and priority boarding

It’s also one of the best-value cabins for travellers deciding where to spend Avios points, especially for long-haul flights where upgrades can massively boost comfort without breaking the Avios bank.

Here’s a quick recap of what you can expect in BA World Traveller Plus:

A Step in the Right Direction

This update may not be revolutionary, but it’s a good sign that BA is giving attention to all its cabins, not just Business and First Class. The addition of winged headrests brings BA Premium Economy more in line with current design trends, improving both sleep quality and personal space.

However, BA’s World Traveller Plus product remains inconsistent across the fleet, with several different versions in service. Some aircraft feature the 2019 seat, others now have this refreshed model, and a few still carry the older pre-2019 design.

For passengers booking BA reward flights or calculating an upgrade, this inconsistency means you may not know which cabin you’ll be assigned until closer to departure. However, it’s fair to say the odds are now improving.

BA’s £7 Billion Transformation Plan

There are over 600 initiatives underway as part of the airline’s £7 billion Transformation Plan, including this one. Around half of the investment is being used for new aircraft, while the rest is dedicated to cabin refurbishments and digital and operational improvements.

The Cardiff maintenance facility has also been expanded to accommodate larger aircraft types for quicker refits and more efficient rollouts. The updated 787-9s are just the start; BA’s flagship A380S are next in line for a complete interior refresh.

Final Thoughts

The new World Traveller Plus cabin may not be groundbreaking, but it’s a timely refresh that improves passenger comfort and aligns the product with modern expectations. If you’re wondering where to spend Avios points or exploring your options in the BA upgrade calculator, moving up to BA Premium Economy could soon mean a noticeably better experience, especially as more aircraft receive these updated seats. When you’re at 30,000 feet, even minor improvements can make a major difference, especially on long-haul flights where a few extra inches of space and a comfortable headrest go a long way.
