Qatar Airways is making an impressive re-entry into First Class travel under its new group CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer’s leadership. Al Meer, who recently took over the reins, has announced a major upgrade to its First Class cabin along with fleet expansion and new aircraft orders from Boeing and Airbus.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Background

Qatar Airways experienced a major leadership change in 2023 as longtime CEO Akbar Al Baker stepped down and made way for Badr Mohammed Al Meer. Al Meer has already begun implementing changes at the airline, and introducing a new First Class cabin is the latest example of his vision.

During Akbar Al Baker's tenure as CEO, he openly expressed his intent to phase out the First Class, saying that it was unnecessary given the high quality of the airline's Business Class. Just last year, Al Baker stated that he “didn’t see the necessity” for First Class. He argued that the amenities provided in Business Class, particularly the airline’s award-winning QSuite, were sufficient.

However, the new CEO clearly holds a different view and is vocal about the need for First Class on certain Qatar Airways flight booking routes, saying that "there is – and there always will be – very high demand for First Class." He’s committed to retaining and improving the cabin, and the airline is already well into developing the new product.

Al Baker's focus was on maximising space and efficiency, whereas Al Meer is doubling down on the luxury segment due to high demand and the airline’s ambition to set new standards in high-end travel.

What We Know So Far

While full details have yet to be disclosed, Al Meer has hinted that the airline will combine the luxury of Qatar Executive’s private jet experience with the convenience of commercial aviation to take its First Class experience to a whole new level.

Qatar Executive’s private jet service caters to the ultra-elite clientele. Its focus on bespoke service and high-end luxury provides the airline with direct insights into high-value customers’ expectations. Integrating this level of service into a commercial airline context will likely raise the bar for First Class travel in the industry, much like the QSuite did for Business Class

The QSuite's fully lie-flat beds and privacy doors set a high standard in the industry. Its success demonstrates the airline’s capacity for innovation and redefining what comfort means in air travel, laying a solid groundwork for the development of their new First Class cabin. The QSuite’s positive reception also suggests that there’s a market appetite for even more luxurious offerings, which the airline aims to tap into with its First Class overhaul.

With this new take on First Class, Qatar Privilege Club members can look forward to an upgraded level of luxury and comfort. Al Meer confidently stated, "nobody can develop a First Class cabin better than us."

Timeline and Pricing

Qatar Airways is well on its way to introducing the new cabin. Al Meer has shared that the development is in its final stages.

“We are 70% to 80% ready. We are only finalising colours and small touches, but hopefully, we will be able to announce it very soon,” he said.

The excitement is building as the airline gears up for the official announcement and rollout. While specific dates have not been disclosed, the anticipation suggests that travellers can expect to hear more about this upgrade very soon.

As for costs, the airline is taking a thoughtful approach to its pricing strategy. The aim is to make this experience accessible without compromising the exclusivity and premium offerings that passengers expect from First Class.

According to CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer, the new cabin pricing will be broadly in line with the current First Class Qatar Airways flight booking fares on the Airbus A380. This ensures continuity and fairness for passengers accustomed to the airline’s existing high-end services.

This strategy also reflects the airline’s commitment to maintaining a balance between luxury and value. By aligning the new First Class pricing with that of the A380, it hopes to retain loyal customers and attract new passengers. This could be a smart move in today’s competitive market, where travellers are not just looking for the best amenities but also value for their money.

Aircraft Orders and Fleet Expansion

Qatar Airways is also expanding its fleet with new aircraft orders from Boeing and Airbus. The recent legal dispute between Qatar Airways and Airbus over concerns related to paint degradation on Airbus A350 aircraft has added complexity to their relationship. However, both parties appear committed to moving beyond these challenges as a resolution would influence fleet management decisions and the broader strategic alignment between the two companies. This backdrop makes the new orders particularly significant as they highlight Qatar Airways' confidence in Airbus's long-term value alongside its orders with Boeing.

Moreover, CEO Al Meer has indicated plans to retain the flagship Airbus A380 aircraft, contrary to the industry trend of phasing out larger, less fuel-efficient models. This decision reflects a strategic choice to leverage the A380’s popular customer appeal and its capacity benefits, especially on high-demand routes. Retaining these aircraft could provide Qatar Airways with a competitive edge in the industry.

Final Thoughts

The industry at large sees many airlines phasing out First Class to focus on more economical Business Class services. But Qatar Airways is making a bold move in the opposite direction to cater to a niche market that values ultimate luxury. The newly announced First Class cabin significantly boosts the perks and value that come with your Qatar Privilege Club membership.

No specific details have been announced yet, so there's a bit of mystery around just how impressive it will be and when we'll see it take to the skies. Keep an eye out for more updates as Qatar Airways gears up to roll out these exciting updates.
