New York

Probably the first US location you’d name in a quick-fire round, New York symbolises the epitome of the American Dream. It’s a vast concrete jungle that’s cosmopolitan, cultural, fiercely commercial, artistic and monumental by the bucket load.

Must sees

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • Brooklyn Bridge
  • Statue of Liberty
  • Top of the Rock
  • Central Park
  • The National 9/11 Memorial and Museum

What to eat

The New York culinary scene is as fast-paced as its subway, but NYC fayre is as iconic as the city skyline. Think street bought hot dogs and huge slices of cheese pizza pie washed down with a beer. Pretty much every block is home to an authentic family-run Jewish or Mediterranean deli, serving heavenly pastrami sandwiches – with melted Swiss cheese and horseradish coleslaw, rustic bagels smothered in cream cheese, and other mouth watering blue-plate specials.

Where to stay

Being in New York, where you stay is very budget dependent, but the good news is that there’s a huge array of different styles of accommodation to suit every visitor.

If you’re on a tight leash, then Airbnb hosts some amazing self-catering apartments and condos in Brooklyn, and the best bit is that you can collect Avios points by booking via Airbnb too!

According to Tripadvisor, The Standard High Line is the best place to stay in the city. With 338 rooms, and towering above an old, elevated train line the hotel is located in the Meatpacking District. Residents can expect sweeping views of Manhattan and the Hudson River, as well as a fun and friendly German beer garden, trendy rooftop club Le Bain, and the legendary Top of The Standard (reopening Late 2022).  Rooms start from $263 a night, based on two adults, but if you're down to splurge you can book the Empire Suite, a 875-square-foot suite with city skyline views from seen from wall-to-wall windows, its own private living room and deep-soaking bathtub from $2,472 a night.

Best time to go

Because New York is a year round destination, the type of holiday you’re searching for dictates the best time to visit.

If ice skating under the Rockefeller Christmas Tree and shopping for festive gifts on Fifth Avenue is what you've always dreamed of, winter is a truly magical time to be in the Big Apple. The Spring and Autumn months are your safest bet if you’re looking for good weather and quieter tourist hotspots - take an umbrella though, as you’ll no doubt experience the odd rain shower. Summer in the city can be hot and humid, but if that’s the only time you can travel with your family you can still enjoy New York City's many attractions, just remember to book accommodation with air-con!

Avios points

NYC is British Airway’s most popular destination for Avios flight redemption. But don’t let that worry you. It’s a well-served route with multiple flights a day to two airports, meaning plenty of seats to fill, so a healthy number are still released for Avios. We’d recommend using our reward seat finder tools though, setting RFF Alerts for this route because it's highly competitive to get the best seats. An off peak Economy return seat will cost you between 9,100 Avios plus £480 to 50,000 Avios and £100 cash.

Miami

Extravagant, opulent and seriously extroverted, Miami is a playground for fun lovers, the rich and the famous. If you’re the life and soul of the party, or you’re looking for a good time, all the time, then Miami is the place for you.

Must sees

  • Speedboat tour of the Miami coastline

  • South Beach
  • Superblue Immersive Art Experience

What to eat

Miami is the OG of cultural fusion when it comes to cuisine. Miami’s food has strong ties with Cuba but visitors to Greater Miami and Miami Beach can also expect loads of Caribbean and South American flavours in their dishes too. With such a melting pot of influences, Miami seems to have its very own taste. A trip to Little Havana is non-negotiable when visiting. Here you can chow down on Cuban Sandwiches (filled with honey-glazed ham, marinated pork, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles), masas de puerco, ropa vieja and garlic shrimp, all washed down with Cuban coffee, which is made with strong espresso, lots of sugar and steamed milk. You’ll find Cuban coffee at the many Ventanitas throughout Miami.

Where to stay

Miami offers you loads of opportunities to live like a king during your trip, as well as covering a range of budgets - so you can really make your stay suit your needs.

The InterContinental Miami is located right in the centre, so you won’t suffer from FOMO here. With 653 luxury rooms and suites, a cocktail bar and a spa, this place provides stylish decor, top-class hospitality and views of Biscayne Bay. Expect to pay around $350 a night.

The YVE Hotel Miami boasts boutique accommodation with easy access to downtown Miami. Its rooms are decorated with stylish interiors and comfortable features, and there’s a bar and gym. Prices here are a bit more modest, starting at $160 a night.

If you're looking to stay in the most luxurious spot Miami has to offer, then it has to be the Four Seasons. Officially 5 Star, its 221 rooms and suites provide real flair and opulence - the hallways even boast a multi-million dollar art collection! There’s a swanky two-acre rooftop terrace with two swimming pools and a separate kids’ area, and guests receive exclusive access to the Equinox gym and spa.

Best time to go

Temperatures are moderate between November and April, so if you’re keen to avoid the notorious humidity of Florida summer time it’s best to visit then. June to November is hurricane season, and you’ll also see lots more rain during this time.

MIA (Miami International Airport) is a major transport hub, with lots of direct flights. There are daily flights from London and due to their frequency there’s typically good reward seat availability. Off-peak Economy return seats will set you back between 11,400 Avios plus around £520 to 60,000 Avios plus £150.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is synonymous with cinematic glamour and Hollywood movie stars. If you're a fan of Tinseltown you’ll doubtless be entranced by the sheer glitz of it all.

Must sees

  • Hollywood sightseeing bus tour
  • Celebrity spotting in Beverly Hills, not to mention Rodeo Drive!
  • Warner Bros Studio
  • Hollywood Walk of Fame
  • Griffiths Park and the Observatory
  • Universal Studios Hollywood

What to eat

Burritos, Tachos and Nachos are everywhere in LA due to the Mexican immigrants who brought many of their best loved dishes with them many years ago. The simple In and Out Burger is a cultural phenomenon in its hometown of Los Angeles. Adored by celebrities and visitors alike, it's one to indulge in during your stay.

Although there are lots of calorific treats to enjoy, LA residents are renowned for their healthy lifestyles and food to match. Sushi is incredibly popular, and there are plenty of places to get it. While some of the health-food trends in LA have probably gone WAY too far, it does mean there are loads of organic and whole food shops, markets and restaurants for tourists to try.

Where to stay

There are so many places to stay in LA! Be prepared to do a lot of Tripadvisor research because you’ll be flooded with options, no matter your budget.

The Dream Hotel Hollywood is highly recommended by other travellers. Located in the Hollywood Hills, it has 178 playfully decorated rooms with lots of nods to the mid-century modern aesthetic of iconic Los Angeles. Prices start from $300 a night. The Hotel Figueroa is certainly eye-catching in its 1920s Spanish Colonial splendour. With 268 rooms, 2 restaurants and 3 bars, as well as a pool that's more reminiscent of Palm Springs or Santa Barbara, this place is definitely one for the Instagram feed. Rooms start at $200 a night.

If you’re looking to stay at a Hollywood icon, and your budget will stretch to it, a booking at the Hollywood Roosevelt is a dream come true. From The Tower, built in 1927, where Gable and Lombard lived, to The Cabanas, vintage 1950s, where Marilyn Monroe resided, guests can choose between 2 distinct accommodations options. Don’t forget the David Hockney pool and the Tropicana Pool Cafe, which is open until 2 am, so you can keep the party going until the early hours. Rooms start at $380 a night.

Best time to go

Due to its sunny climate, LA is a year-round destination. You could literally pick any month to visit and have a great time, but depending on your personal preferences some seasons might be better than others. March to May is classed as “off-season” but the weather is still warm and everything’s open. September to November offers mild weather, so it’s good for families looking to stay away from the constant heat. June to August is peak season. Expect huge crowds and blazing sunshine.

San Francisco

Loved the world over due to its cable cars and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, there is more to San Francisco than meets the eye. Fisherman's Wharf offers unique views and a multitude of culinary delights. Haight Ashbury is bursting with vintage treasures, and Presidio is definitely one for the history buffs amongst us.

Must sees

  • Golden Gate Bridge and Park
  • Alcatraz
  • Fishermans Wharf
  • Ferry Building Marketplace
  • Union Square
  • The Exploratorium

What to eat

San Francisco has an outstanding culinary reputation and with good reason. A melting pot of cuisine, and with a penchant for comfort food, you’ll certainly eat well in the City by the Bay.

For breezy days by the water, you can’t beat chowder, especially chowder that comes served in a sour bread bowl! Cioppino is another popular dish, a rich tomato-based broth chockablock with Dungeness crab, mussels, and more. It often comes as a sharing dish, served with ladles, bibs, and a loaf of crusty bread. You’ve never had Prime Rib before until you’ve had it in San Fran, accompanied by a mountain of creamed spinach.

Where to stay

San Francisco accommodation can be expensive compared to other cities like LA and Las Vegas, but there are some good deals to be found. The Washington Square Inn is a sweet little guest house with just 15 rooms, situated in the very heart of San Francisco’s legendary North Beach neighbourhood. Rooms have views of iconic city landmarks such as the Coit Tower, Downtown San Francisco and Washington Square Park. Prices start at $200 a night.

The Hyatt Regency San Francisco is a luxury waterfront hotel with views of San Francisco Bay, a restaurant, a bar and a gym. With over 800 rooms it's a big hotel, but it’s also close to all the major attractions, and if you collect Hyatt Points you’re on to a winner. Rooms start from $460 a night.

If you’re looking for world-renowned grandeur then it has to be the Fairmont. With a reputation for impeccable service, you’re in for a treat if you splash out on one of its 606 rooms or suites. You can dine in the beautiful Laurel Court restaurant or enjoy cocktails in the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar, where there’s live music and an even livelier atmosphere. Rooms at the Fairmont start at $600 a night.

Best time to go

The best time to visit San Francisco is between September and November. This is when the city enjoys an “Indian Summer”, and the school term has begun, so you can benefit from the warmest weather and cheaper prices. Between June and August visitors can expect chillier temperatures and the city's renowned fog rolling into the Bay. If you’re visiting San Francisco with the kids over the summer holidays, don’t forget your jumpers and jackets!

BA reward flights in Off-peak Economy return cost between 11,400 Avios plus around £520 to 60,000 Avios plus £150.

Las Vegas

Interestingly, Las Vegas is Spanish for “the meadows”, but we can all agree that this doesn’t really describe the city that never sleeps. Sin City, a much better-suited moniker, is a worldwide renowned resort city, an explosion of gambling, shopping, entertainment and night-long parties. Everything is done to an excess, to the delight of visitors.

Must sees

  • The Vegas Strip
  • Grand Canyon
  • Gondola boat rides down the Grand Canal
  • Madame Tussauds
  • Cirque du Soleil

What to eat

There’s a tremendous variety of flavours to explore in Vegas. The restaurants cater to every genre of food, from juicy steaks to vegan meals. Dirty Corn is an adored street food. Who wouldn’t love grilled corn slathered in butter, lime mayo sauce, Hot Cheetos and melted cheese?! LA Lasagne’s are a real rule breaker, a pure indulgence. With four deep-fried layers of pasta, stuffed with bolognese, roasted garlic sauce and ricotta this is some of the best food in Las Vegas to enjoy. Sage Fried Chicken is definitely one for the foodies amongst us, but you need to be hungry! Two huge fried chicken breasts, four waffles baked with bacon bits, and a mound of fried leeks make up this heavenly dish. It’s good that Las Vegas requires a lot of walking to burn those calories!

Where to stay

Las Vegas is home to some incredible hotels, unlike any other in the world. The attitude of grandeur, luxury and excess certainly extends to Las Vegas accommodation.

Probably the best known, and most coveted place to stay in the city, The Bellagio has a casino, live shows, pools, a shopping centre and so much more. Rooms start from $600 a night. The Wynn Las Vegas is more budget friendly, starting at $200 a night. It still offers residents a casino, pool and bar, but it’s a much more understated accommodation than The Bellagio. The Venetian is certainly party central, offering residents restaurants, pools, a spa, a casino and a selection of bars, including its own nightclub TAO. The hotel is the second-largest hotel in the world, boasting 4,049 rooms and 3,068 suites, so there’s plenty of room for everyone! Prices start at $350 a night.

Best time to go

Las Vegas has a hot, desert-like climate with dry summers and mild winters. Rainfall is pretty scarce throughout the year, so you’ll probably want to bear this in mind when planning your trip. October and November are generally the best months to visit Las Vegas because the weather is pleasant and the Christmas crowds won’t have arrived. March and April are also advisable months. Though it isn’t peak season at this time, there are still lots of visitors, and the weather is rising from the chillier winter months.
