News

British Airways revealed its highly awaited new First Class seat on Monday, November 25, at the airline's Waterside headquarters in London. The newly launched suite is scheduled to debut in early to mid-2026 and will be installed across British Airways’ fleet of Airbus A380s.

The suite is a major upgrade from the previous renovations made in 2020, which included the introduction of privacy doors and three-point seat belts on several Boeing 777 aircraft.

As the only UK-based European carrier to offer First Class service across the Atlantic, BA reward flights promise the very best of luxury travel. This latest First Class suite is just one of over 120 upgrades launched under a £7 billion investment plan to transform the passenger experience.

Other initiatives include the addition of three new routes between the UK and Italy beginning in 2025. These will connect London Heathrow Airport to Rimini, London Gatwick Airport to Salerno, and London City Airport to Olbia. In another exciting development, a spokesperson confirmed that a new BA app is also expected to launch by the end of March.

Coming back to the new First Class suite, here's everything you need to know about what could be the most luxurious way to fly.

Research Phase

British Airways relied on feedback from its team and passengers when designing this new First Class suite. In doing so, it focused on functionality and purpose to fine-tune the design elements and features. The airline also worked closely with world-class manufacturer Collins Aerospace RTX business to create the seat, following its involvement in British Airways' Club Suite and short-haul aircraft seats earlier this year.

Design Upgrades

British Airways plans to replicate the experience of a high-end British hotel at 35,000 feet. The cabin is designed to be both elegant and practical, inspired by fashion designer Ozwald Boateng's uniforms. The suites will be positioned on the A380's lower deck so that the upper deck's sloping ceiling does not cause discomfort to the travellers.

The cabin includes a total of 12 seats placed in a 1-2-1 configuration to maximise space and privacy. The seating arrangement has been mapped out by a team of designers and manufacturers from across Great Britain and Ireland, including London, Glasgow, West Yorkshire, Kilkeel, and Dublin. For those in the middle seats, the lack of a window is compensated by a sliding panel that facilitates easy movement between suites and 'buddy dining' opportunities. Each suite also includes a built-in charging pad for mobile devices and a unique flip-up feature to hold phones securely.

Each seat is an impressive 36.5 inches wide. If you feel like relaxing, the seat can be opened up to a bed length of 79 inches. Other features include a multi-purpose ottoman, a discreetly integrated table, and a 32-inch 4K TV screen. Adjustable mood lighting options such as 'relax', 'dine', and 'cinema' help match your mood.

A sliding divider in the centre of the cabin transforms the space into a shared lounge area with stowable tables for dining with a companion or a group of up to four across the two seats. The suite's 60-inch curved enclosure ensures privacy while maintaining a sense of openness.

Travellers need not worry about their luggage, as each suite comes with ample storage space. There’s even a dedicated wardrobe space for outerwear such as suit jackets or coats. A button-activated window pulls the blinds down for more privacy. Sound-absorbing panels and a 'do not disturb' function are also accessible via a wireless control tablet. Passengers have the convenience of Bluetooth connectivity for personal or airline-provided wireless headphones, and a 10-inch tablet-style controller puts management of the in-flight entertainment, lighting, and seat settings at their fingertips.

Calum Laming, British Airways' Chief Customer Officer, shared his enthusiasm for the new design, "We're incredibly proud to launch the next era of First that pushes the boundaries of comfort, luxury, and modernity, taking into consideration customer preferences and expectations to the finest detail."

He added, "This coupled with our incredible colleagues delivering a world-class service, following the launch of our First Service Specialists scheme, as well as the many benefits of flying First such as First Wing entry, access to our award-winning lounges including our Concorde Room and priority boarding, means we truly believe we offer a winning combination in delivering an extraordinary experience for our customers."

Flight Routes

The routes featuring the new First Class suites have yet to be disclosed. However, the airline's A380s currently operate from London to several U.S. destinations, including

  • Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)

Other British Airways First Class Offerings

British Airways currently provides First Class service on the following models in its fleet:

  • 16 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, each equipped with eight First Class seats and the older Club World Business Class cabins.
  • 10 Boeing 787-10 aircraft, also outfitted with eight First Class seats.
  • 15 Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, with 13 of these featuring eight First Class seats and Club Suites, and two featuring 14 First Class seats alongside the older Club World cabins.
  • 15 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, each with eight First Class seats and equipped with Club Suites.
  • 10 Airbus A380 aircraft with 14 First Class seats and the older Club World Business Class cabins.

Routine maintenance and refurbishment can impact the fleet's availability, meaning the number of aircraft with First Class cabins in service may vary over time. The existing First Class suites design is consistent across the fleet with a 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone configuration. Each suite provides direct aisle access and a lie-flat bed.

Are All British Airways First Class Seats Similar?

There are minor variations in the First Class seats across different types of aircraft. The oldest design, introduced in 2010 and found on the A380s and most Boeing 777s, has a beige and navy blue colour and is equipped with earlier models of inflight entertainment screens. These seats are not equipped with doors.

Final Thoughts

The new British Airways First Class suite is welcome news for Avios flight finders looking to experience the next level of luxury in the skies. Retaining the spacious 1-2-1 layout, the suite is set to be the most luxurious cabin BA has provided to date.

It will undoubtedly face competition from other airlines, such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines, that have already set new standards with their latest First Class suites. The long waiting period before the BA suites are rolled out may also cause disappointment for those wanting to use their BA reward flights. However, for those planning a trip in the future, if you’ve accrued enough miles for these high-end accommodations, the reward can be worth the wait. Stay tuned with Reward Flight Finder (RFF) for news and updates on their release.
