Where can you go with a Companion Voucher and 200,000 Avios?

Last Updated: 25 Jan 2026

Avios Destinations

We’ve already covered what you can do with a Companion Voucher and 100,000 British Airways Avios, and how things change once you reach 300,000. Now it’s time for the middle ground. This part of the series looks at what you can do with a Companion Voucher and 200,000 Avios, the routes where this balance of Avios and value works well, and how to use Avios points to get there.

Before we dive into the details, it's worth taking a moment to understand exactly how the Companion Voucher works and why it makes such a difference at this level.

Is the British Airways Companion Voucher worth the hype?

If you've heard one sales pitch, you've heard them all. But the British Airways Companion Voucher really is one of the most valuable perks available to Avios collectors, and it's also one of the most misunderstood. Put simply, it lets you book a second reward seat on the same British Airways flight in the same cabin, for no additional Avios.

In other words, you pay the Avios for one seat, and your companion flies for free, at least in Avios terms. All taxes, fees, and carrier charges still apply to both passengers, but the Avios savings can be substantial, especially in premium cabins.

Despite its name, you don't actually need a companion to use a Companion Voucher. You can also use it as a solo traveller to receive 50% off the Avios cost of a British Airways reward flight. So, yes, the Companion Voucher actually is worth the hype.

Which Companion Voucher do you have?

SF.jpg

Having said that, not all Companion Vouchers are created equal. The redemption options available to you depend on which British Airways American Express card you hold. There are two options to choose from:

British Airways American Express (Free Card)

If you hold the free British Airways American Express card (Representative 29.1% APR variable, earning 1 Avios per £1 spent, 5,000 bonus Avios after spending £2,000 in first 3 months), you'll earn a Companion Voucher after spending £15,000 within your card year. This voucher can be used to:

Redemptions are limited to Economy only, which means long-haul premium cabins aren't accessible with this version of the voucher.

British Airways American Express Premium Plus

The British Airways American Express Premium Plus card (Representative 135.7% APR variable, £300 annual fee, earning 1.5 Avios per £1 spent and 3 Avios per £1 with British Airways or BA Holidays, 30,000 bonus Avios after spending £6,000 in first 3 months) really goes far in terms of value. After spending £15,000 in a year, you'll earn a Companion Voucher that can be used in any cabin, as long as both seats are in the same class. That includes Premium Economy, Business Class, and First with additional Club World reward seats. Solo travellers can also redeem the voucher for a 50% Avios discount in any cabin.

For the redemptions we're about to explore, we're assuming the use of a Premium Plus Companion Voucher, as it's the only way to unlock long-haul Business Class value at this Avios level.

What You Can Do with a Companion Voucher and 200,000 Avios

With a Companion Voucher in hand, having 200,000 British Airways Avios puts you in an attractive middle ground. While the balance isn't an eye-watering sum that takes years to build, it's enough to unlock some genuinely high-value long-haul Business Class redemptions when used strategically. At this level, you're firmly in "sweet spot" territory, letting you:

  • Move into long-haul Business Class, rather than Premium Economy
  • Avail off-peak pricing that keeps Avios costs in check
  • Travel to destinations that feel like proper holidays

For the purposes of this guide, we're focusing exclusively on long-haul Business Class return flights for two travellers using a Companion Voucher. If you're travelling solo, simply halve the Avios figures we quote below, the logic and value remain the same.

A Note on Club Suite Availability

BA-club-suite.jpg

We all know the real prize in British Airways Business Class is the Club Suite, the version with direct aisle access, sliding doors, and a noticeably more private experience. The catch is that it isn't fitted across the entire long-haul fleet, so whether you get it depends on the route, season, and aircraft rotation.

Where it's relevant, we'll flag destinations where Club Suite aircraft are commonly used, and where they appear only occasionally. If you're specifically looking to book flights with the latest Business Class seats, Reward Flight Finder (RFF)'s Club Suite Filter can help you pinpoint which flights are operating with Club Suite. When booking a Club Suite is a priority, the aircraft you're on matters almost as much as the Avios price.

With that in mind, let's move on to the destinations where 200,000 Avios and a Companion Voucher can take you, starting with one of the Caribbean's most glamorous islands.

London to Barbados

barbados.jpg

If it's good enough for Rihanna, it's probably good enough for you, too. Barbados, besides being Riri's hometown, has long been a magnet for A-listers escaping winter gloom, but its appeal goes well beyond celebrity sightings and platinum beachfront resorts. The beaches are as good as advertised: soft, pale sand on the west coast where the water barely ripples, and a wilder, wind-brushed Atlantic side around Bathsheba where surfers chase serious breaks.

But Barbados rewards travellers who look inland too. You’ll find old plantation estates, rum distilleries that have been perfecting their craft for centuries, and Bridgetown's UNESCO-listed centre, which is a reminder that this small island once sat at the heart of the British Empire's Caribbean ambitions. Add in Friday-night fish fries in Oistins, where smoke, music, and flying fish collide, and you've got the perfect holiday destination.

From an Avios perspective, flights to Barbados are among the strongest long-haul destinations when paired with a Companion Voucher. An off-peak Business Class return for two passengers comes in at 198,000 Avios plus £499 in taxes.

Even better, British Airways regularly operates aircraft with the latest Club Suite on this route, meaning you can enjoy fully enclosed seating, direct aisle access, and a much better Business Class experience across the Atlantic. Availability can vary by flight, so make sure to apply RFF's Club Suite Filter to identify which flights to Barbados are scheduled with the newest cabins before you book.

London to Cancun

Cancun.jpg

Cancun gets talked about like it's "just" a beach destination, but that undersells why it keeps drawing more visitors every year. Beyond the headline beaches and resort strips, Cancun works because of its proximity to cenotes, jungle landscapes, and some of the Yucatán's most impressive Mayan sites. It also has all the practical stuff covered: good restaurants, solid infrastructure, and places to stay that range from full-on indulgent to comfortably affordable.

Flights to Cancun are an excellent use of a Companion Voucher when paired with a 200,000 Avios balance. An off-peak Business Class return for two passengers costs 198,000 Avios plus £499 in taxes. Without a Companion Voucher, that same redemption would cost nearly double the Avios, which is why this route consistently appears in our articles on how to use Avios points well.

London to Grenada

St-George's-harbour-offers-relaxation.jpg

If you've never been to the Caribbean, choosing a destination can feel like standing in front of a wall of nearly identical postcards. Look a little closely, and you will see why Grenada leads the rest with its mixed landscape of beaches, rainforests, and volcanic hills. It's called the "Spice Isle" for a reason, and not in a gimmicky, gift-shop way. The air really does carry cinnamon and clove, the soil is fertile and dramatic, and the landscape has enough texture to keep you from falling into the classic Caribbean routine of "pool, beach, repeat" (unless that's exactly what you're after — no judgement).

The island's capital, St George's, is one of the Caribbean's prettiest, but if you have the time (and you should), make the hop to Carriacou or Petite Martinique. Grenada's also known for people who like their food and drink with a bit of backstory: rum distilleries with history, farm-to-table foodie tours, and local dishes that taste like someone's family recipe because they usually are.

British Airways Avios collectors should keep Grenada at the top of their list of the best long-haul sweet spots. An off-peak Business Class return redemption here costs 198,000 Avios plus £499 for two people when used with a Companion Voucher.

BA occasionally uses aircraft with the latest Club Suite on British Airways reward flights to Grenada, but it's not consistent. If Club Suite is part of your plan, it's worth checking aircraft schedules on RFF before you lock anything in.

London to Miami

miami.jpg

Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine may have retired, but every time you visit The Sunshine City, be warned: the rhythm is going to get you. People come to Miami for the obvious stuff first: the strip of sand at South Beach, the Art Deco lines on Ocean Drive, the skyline flexing across Biscayne Bay. Then they stay for the bits that make the city feel like more than a postcard.

These include Cuban and Latin American energy, Cuban influence on food and music, and neighbourhoods like Wynwood, where street art is treated as a serious cultural asset. A day in Miami can take you from galleries and murals to Little Havana with domino tables and live music drifting out of doorways, then out to the Everglades, watching the landscape go flat and strangely calming.

Miami is popular year-round, but reward-seat availability is often best when you're flexible by a few days either side of your ideal dates. If you're planning around school holidays or peak winter sun season, you'll need to be early (at least 8 months). This is one of those routes where procrastination gets expensive. An off-peak Business Class return redemption for two with a Companion Voucher usually costs around 198,000 Avios plus £499.

London to San José, Costa Rica

costa-rica.jpg

San José is the main arrival and departure hub for most foreign travellers heading into Costa Rica. The truth is that many visitors will skip staying in San José altogether and head straight for the outdoors. We're here to tell you that's a rookie move. While the city's biggest strength is location (you can land, shake off the flight, and then start moving in pretty much any direction), if you do choose to stay, the city rewards you with its true colours.

Spend some time at the museums and get to understand the country you're about to explore. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and the Jade Museum are the big hitters for a reason: they're the quickest way to add context before you disappear into rainforests and beach towns. And the Central Market is a great place to drink coffee, eat something comforting, and watch the everyday life of the city happen around you.

Within striking distance, you've got beaches like Jacó for surf and easy weekend energy, plus national parks like Braulio Carrillo for that first hit of rainforest with wildlife. You can do a volcano day trip to Poás or Irazú, come back, and still be in bed at a sensible hour. Its efficiency is underrated when you're trying to squeeze the most out of a long-haul trip.

San José is often easier to plan around than some of the "one-week-only" leisure routes because it's a practical hub. You can take a partner from London to San José on an off-peak Business Class return redemption for 198,000 Avios plus £499. British Airways occasionally uses aircraft with the latest Club Suite on this route, but it's not something you can safely assume. Always check the operating aircraft before booking through RFF's Club Suite Filter.
