Finnair has officially launched its eagerly awaited overhaul of the Finnair Plus program, adopting Avios as its new rewards currency as of March 2024. This update aligns Finnair Plus more closely with its transatlantic joint venture partners, including notable airlines such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Vueling.

With the official rollout in March 2024, the updated Finnair Plus program will offer members a more integrated experience. Read on for full details.

Points Accumulation

The revamp introduces a revenue-based system for accumulating points instead of the traditional distance-flown criteria. Members will be rewarded based on their spending on flights and ancillary services, and Plus points and tier points will be converted into Finnair Avios at a 3:2 ratio.

When it comes to stacking up those Avios, Finnair Plus has tailored the earning rates to generously reward your spending. The formula is simple: the more you spend, the more Avios you get. Basic Finnair Plus members start with 6x Avios per €1 spent, Silver members get up to 7x, Gold members to 8x, Platinum members to 9x, and the elite Platinum Lumo members top the charts with 10x Avios per €1 spent.

Elite status has also received other updates, with revised tier points thresholds that offer a clearer path to climbing the membership ladder. Silver status now requires 15,000 tier points, Gold at 45,000, Platinum requires 80,000, and the Platinum Lumo status sets the bar at 300,000 tier points, with 250,000 of those needing to be earned on Finnair flights.

Here’s where things get even more interesting: the program has introduced the option to convert Finnair Avios back into tier points, paving the runway to elite status. This not only offers flexibility in how you use your rewards but also provides an avenue to Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status, complete with its coveted lounge access and premium travel perks.

However, there are caps on how many tier points you can buy back. Members who are not yet elites, and those with Silver status, have the option to trade their Avios for a maximum of 7,500 tier points. Members who’ve reached Gold status can convert their Avios to accumulate up to 22,500 tier points. For those at the top tier of Platinum and Platinum Lumo, the exchange rate climbs even higher, allowing for up to 40,000 tier points to be obtained through Avios conversion.

Redemption Rates and Availability

The new redemption rates have been thoughtfully designed to be competitive and appealing, even including some pleasant surprises. For example, you might find that the number of Avios required for a Business Class seat within certain regions is particularly attractive, especially compared to what other loyalty programs may demand.

Below is the Avios redemption structure for one-way Finnair reward flights:

The program has also increased the availability of 'Saver' reward seats, a boon for members who've faced the frustration of limited reward seat availability in the past. Now, short-haul flights guarantee at least six reward seats — two in Business and four in Economy. For long-haul journeys, the minimum is even more generous: two in Business, two in Premium Economy (where available), and four in Economy.

The new Finnair Plus program has also revised its redemption rates for partner airline travel. Each partner airline now comes with its own reward rates, an interesting development that could potentially offer more beneficial redemption options.

Milestone Rewards and Upgrade Benefits

Another interesting addition to the program is the introduction of milestone rewards, a new system designed to sprinkle extra perks on the journey towards elite status.

Here’s how it works: as members hit certain tier point milestones, they unlock a range of extras. The basic member who accumulates 12,000 tier points is awarded with a bonus of 3,000 Avios. Silver members are rewarded with two passes to Finnair lounges after earning 20,000 tier points. Gold members who accumulate the 55,000 tier points mark are treated to two upgrade benefits, and Platinum members hitting 95,000 tier points receive four upgrade benefits. The airline's most devoted Platinum Lumo members enjoy eight upgrade benefits after earning 310,000 tier points, and another four upon reaching 320,000 tier points.

What’s more, Finnair Plus has streamlined the upgrade process for elite members. There’s now just one type of upgrade voucher to deal with. You'll need one voucher to boost your short haul Finnair reward flight from Economy to Business. For long haul upgrades, two vouchers take you from Economy to Premium Economy, three from Premium Economy to Business, and four will propel you all the way from Economy to Business.

Inflight Messaging and Wi-Fi Packages

You can now stay connected to your favourite chat apps even while cruising above the clouds - All Finnair Plus members now have access to free messaging on short-haul flights. And for those with Gold and Platinum status, Finnair takes connectivity a notch higher with a 30-minute streaming Wi-Fi package to keep you entertained on your journey. This means that not only can you send messages, you can also stay entertained with your favourite shows or movies.

Final Thoughts

These updates reflect Finnair’s commitment to making its program more accessible and rewarding for its members. The adoption of Avios not only broadens the scope for earning and redeeming points across a network of partner airlines but also introduces a more user-centric approach to loyalty. Whether you're saving Avios for a special occasion or you're a frequent flyer looking to stretch your points as far as they can go, the improved redemption rates and increased reward seat availability will certainly improve your travel experience.
