Points Pointers

Marriott Bonvoy entered a new corner of the UK travel-rewards market in November 2025 with the addition of two Mastercard debit cards, launched in partnership with Currensea.

Do either of these cards deserve a place in your wallet? Let's find out.

An Overview of the Marriott Bonvoy Debit Cards

Let's start by describing what these cards are and aren't. They sit slightly outside the usual travel-rewards card category because they're debit cards rather than credit cards. That means they operate by taking payments directly from your existing bank account, rather than borrowing money and paying it back later.

Both cards are issued in partnership with Currensea, a UK fintech specialising in travel-focused payment cards. The card connects to your current account using open-banking technology. Your payments are processed through Mastercard, and the funds are taken from your bank account shortly afterwards.

If that sounds like how a normal debit card works, you're not entirely wrong. What sets it apart from a traditional debit card is that the spending you make earns Marriott Bonvoy points. The icing on the cake is that you also get to benefit from lower foreign exchange charges than many standard UK bank cards.

Another way they're better than credit cards is that you avoid the usual scrutiny of a credit check and line of credit history, which credit cards require to ensure stronger purchase protections and additional travel perks.

Simply put, as long as you have a compatible UK current account and pass a soft identity check, you're eligible to apply for the Marriott Bonvoy debit cards. This makes the cards especially appealing to students, retirees, and others who prefer not to open another credit line.

Both cards operate on the Mastercard network and work with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Transactions appear on your current account statement in the same way as any other debit card purchase. The cards are managed through a mobile app that provides spending alerts, transaction tracking, and security controls.

Let's look at each card one by one.

Marriott Bonvoy Debit Card

This is the no frills, standard version, which is also simpler to use. The annual fee is lower, and the spending requirement for the welcome bonus is relatively modest. Think of it as the starter pack with training wheels, so you can move on to its fancier version once you get the hang of it.

What to Expect:

Earning Rates

Silver Elite Status

Silver Elite normally requires 10 nights each year. The debit card automatically grants that status.

Benefits include:

While these benefits are modest, the 10 Elite Night Credits provided each year can still be useful for travellers working toward higher status levels.

Marriott Bonvoy Premium Debit Card

Welcome to the exclusive club. The Premium card targets travellers who spend more time abroad or stay at Marriott properties more often.

Gold Elite Status

Gold Elite normally requires 25 nights per year.

Benefits include:

  • 25% bonus base points on stays
  • 2:00 pm late checkout when available
  • Welcome points gift on each stay
  • Room upgrade when available

Gold status is not the most valuable tier in the programme, but it can still improve the frequent hotel stay experience.

Annual Free Night Reward

Premium cardholders can also receive a free night award when they meet annual spending thresholds abroad. These are:

These certificates can be redeemed at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and are issued when the card renews.

Let's do a recap of what both cards offer:

Understanding Elite Night Credits

In a market saturated with fancy-sounding cards that basically do the same thing, it's refreshing if something unique is introduced. And that's where we think Marriott Bonvoy captures the travel market. We're a greedy lot; always looking for ways to collect points, reduce expenses and get freebies. The Elite Night Credits, included with both cards, are just what regular Marriott guests may be looking for.

In the Marriott Bonvoy programme, elite status normally depends on the number of nights you stay at Marriott hotels during a calendar year.

The programme includes several tiers:

  • Silver Elite – requires 10 nights
  • Gold Elite – requires 25 nights
  • Platinum Elite – requires 50 nights
  • Titanium Elite – requires 75 nights
  • Ambassador Elite – requires 100 nights and high annual spending

Each level comes with additional benefits such as bonus points, room upgrades, late checkout and lounge access.

Many travellers consider Platinum Elite the most valuable level. Members receive lounge access where available, complimentary breakfast at many brands, guaranteed late checkout until 4:00 pm in most cases, and better room upgrades.

Reaching that level normally requires 50 nights per year, which can be difficult for occasional travellers, but Elite Night credits can help reduce the number of nights needed for status. Why? Because both Marriott Bonvoy debit cards provide automatic credits each year:

Travellers who also hold the Marriott Bonvoy American Express credit card may find the picture more interesting. That card also provides 15 Elite Night Credits each year, and Marriott allows these credits to stack.

That means you could receive up to 35 Elite Night Credits annually from the two cards combined. With 35 nights already credited, reaching Platinum Elite would require just 15 additional nights during the year.

Where the Cards Are Strong

travel-cards.jpg

The Marriott Bonvoy debit cards have a few strengths compared to many standard bank cards. The first is the ability to earn Marriott Bonvoy points on everyday spending. This can add up to a major chunk of change if you frequently stay in Marriott hotels. They also provide automatic Marriott Bonvoy status, which means you don't need to complete hotel stays to access certain benefits.

Another important advantage is the lower foreign exchange fee. Many UK debit and credit cards charge around 2.99% for overseas purchases, but both Marriott Bonvoy debit cards charge only 0.5%. For example, spending £3,000 abroad with a typical bank card could incur around £90 in FX fees, but with a 0.5% fee, the same spending would cost only £15.

If you already pay foreign transaction fees on your everyday bank cards, you may find that switching overseas spending to the Marriott debit card means both points and savings. For travellers who prefer debit cards over credit cards, this may be one of the best debit cards for travel currently available in the UK.

Both cards also include an optional round-up feature in the mobile app. This allows purchases to be rounded up to the nearest amount, with the extra pennies converted into additional Marriott Bonvoy points. All of these tiny niceties might not move the needle much on their own, but taken together, they can slowly build your points balance over time.

Where the Cards Are Weak

Let's be clear, there's no one-size-fits-all solution for everyone, and to search for that is futile. These cards will not suit everyone despite their strengths.

The first consideration is the annual fee. While £55 for the standard card is relatively low, £175 for the Premium card is a major commitment for a debit card.

And let's be honest, not all travellers stay at Marriott properties. So that if you find yourself in that group, extracting meaningful value from the programme might not be a pleasant exercise.

Yes, the foreign exchange fee is lower than many cards, but lower is not zero. Some travel credit cards offer completely fee-free foreign spending; this isn't one of them. So, if foreign spending is high in your travels, maybe look for a card that helps you reduce those fees.

If you enjoy perks associated with status levels, such as breakfast or lounge access, then it's important to look at the cards closely. Because while Silver and Gold Elite come with some useful benefits, you need to reach the Platinum Elite tier to get the really significant ones, like breakfast or lounge access.

And finally, it all comes down to your needs. As with any loyalty product, the real value depends heavily on how often you travel and how frequently you stay within the programme.

How These Cards Compare With Airline Cards

Getting down to the nitty-gritty. Many UK travellers focus their loyalty strategy on airline miles rather than hotel points. Products such as the British Airways American Express or Barclaycard Avios cards are often the best way to earn Avios if you prioritise flights.

The Marriott Bonvoy debit cards exist for a different audience. These cards earn Marriott Bonvoy points, which are mainly used for hotel stays across Marriott's portfolio of more than 9,000 properties worldwide.

An Avios debit card or airline credit card may provide stronger value if your main goal is earning airline miles. However, hotel points can complement airline rewards as well. Many travellers already use Avios for flights while relying on hotel loyalty programmes to reduce accommodation costs. A Marriott Bonvoy debit card can help those travellers earn hotel rewards without changing their airline strategy.

In short, they focus on a different part of the travel experience, which may or may not matter to you.

Another way to look at it is from the point of accessibility. Because these are debit cards, they can be easier to obtain than premium travel credit cards, which often have stricter approval requirements. So, compared to having nothing, it's a start towards having something that earns you points.

Who These Cards Are For

marriot-hotel-lobby.jpg

It all boils down to you. Different travellers will find value in different aspects of the cards:

Frequent Marriott Guests

Travellers who regularly stay at Marriott properties are the most obvious audience. Earning Marriott Bonvoy points on everyday spending helps build balances faster, while Elite Night Credits make it easier to move toward higher status levels.

Travellers Working Toward Higher Status

Anyone already collecting Elite Night Credits through hotel stays may appreciate the automatic credits provided by the cards. The path to Platinum Elite becomes a lot shorter when combined with the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card.

Frequent International Travellers

Travellers who spend large amounts overseas may find the 0.5% FX fee attractive compared with typical UK bank cards.

People Without Travel Credit Cards

Some travellers prefer not to open additional credit lines or may not meet the eligibility requirements for travel credit cards. Because these are debit cards, they provide a simpler entry point into travel rewards.

Travellers Who Prefer Hotel Rewards

Finally, these cards are best suited to travellers whose loyalty strategy focuses on hotel stays rather than flights.

Should You Get One?

The answer depends on how you travel.

The Marriott Bonvoy debit card is a relatively low-cost entry point into the programme and a simple way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points from everyday spending.

The Marriott Bonvoy Premium Debit Card comes with stronger earning rates, more Elite Night Credits, and a higher status tier, which may appeal to frequent Marriott guests.

If you focus mainly on airline miles and the best way to earn Avios, you may prefer airline-focused cards instead. If you're a regular Marriott traveller, however, the debit cards are another way to build points and status through everyday spending without opening another credit line.
