Iberia confirms free Starlink wi-fi From 2026

Within days of British Airways' announcement of free high-speed internet across its fleet, Iberia has also confirmed it will roll out Starlink Wi-Fi from 2026 at no cost to any passenger. The timing is no accident as both carriers are part of IAG Loyalty, which has struck a group-wide deal with SpaceX's Starlink for gate-to-gate, high-speed internet to both short- and long-haul flights. For travellers, that means a future where "connected like home" is the baseline expectation on Iberia flights.

What We Know So Far

Iberia Airlines has said that installations will begin sometime in 2026. As with any fleet project, the first part involves certification. However, the hardware can be fitted relatively quickly once an aircraft is cleared.

Iberia's streamlined Airbus lineup should help keep complexity in check. But the airline hasn't yet confirmed which subfleets will be upgraded first or how quickly the retrofit will progress. If IAG's pacing mirrors that of its peers already flying with Starlink, customers should see the first equipped aircraft enter service not long after the programme starts, with steady momentum as hangar slots become available.

What This Means for Travellers

Iberia's agreement with SpaceX will see Starlink's low-Earth-orbit network fitted across the airline's Airbus mainline fleet (A320 family, A330, A350). Because these satellites orbit far closer to Earth than traditional geostationary systems, latency decreases and bandwidth increases substantially.

Iberia is quoting download speeds of up to 450 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 70 Mbps, which means faster speeds for live streaming, video calls, cloud documents, e-commerce checkouts, and even online gaming, even while flying at 38,000 feet.

More importantly, the connection will be available gate to gate, not just while you’re flying. Not only that, passengers can connect multiple devices (laptop, tablet, phone) without needing to jump through login hoops or purchase passes. It's a meaningful upgrade over the paid options many flyers know today, and a strong statement about the future standard for onboard connectivity in Europe.

Connectivity Without Exclusivity

The new service will be complimentary across the board, including Business Class on Iberia Airlines as well as Economy and Premium Economy. That aligns neatly with the airline's broader customer-experience ambitions and answers a frequent flyer wish list item: fast, consistent Wi-Fi that doesn't depend on cabin, route, or aircraft subtype.

For long-haul sectors where productivity matters most, customers should feel the benefits immediately; think stable VPNs, large file transfers, and low-latency video meetings that behave more like office internet than airborne compromises.

The Bigger Picture

Starlink's airline roster has expanded quickly, with announcements and activations spanning Europe, the Middle East, North America, and the Pacific. Iberia's move makes it the first major Spanish carrier to declare a full-fleet Starlink pathway, placing the airline among a growing cohort that treats premium-grade connectivity as a core service, not a paid add-on.

The Starlink rollout is a headline step in Flight Plan 2030, Iberia's strategic roadmap that earmarks €6 billion for innovation, digitalisation, and operational upgrades, including the creation of Ciudad Iberia, a next-generation aeronautical innovation hub. In practical terms, free high-speed connectivity impacts everything from the cabin experience to in-flight care and real-time operations, positioning Iberia alongside its IAG peers in a coordinated tech upgrade.

Rewarding Loyal Customers

Always-on internet at altitude also dovetails with Iberia's loyalty ecosystemIberia Plus members can check itineraries, manage seats, and even browse reward flight availability from their phone while en route. It's easy to imagine travellers using the Avios Calculator for flights mid-journey to price a weekend getaway or to top up balances before a sale drops. That's a subtle but powerful quality-of-life improvement.

For leisure customers, this marks the end of the "download everything before boarding" era and the beginning of uninterrupted streaming, messaging, and planning on Iberia flights. For corporate travellers, it's a welcome sign to return to normal work routines, even on long-haul segments. And for enthusiasts, it's a smoother way to track reward flight availability, compare options within Iberia Plus, and run the Avios Calculator for flights while you're still in the seat.
