British Airways has recently announced a substantial financial commitment to improve its engineering maintenance facility at Cardiff Airport. The investment will upgrade the capabilities of one of the three maintenance bays at the British Airways Maintenance Cardiff (BAMC) facility to accommodate bigger A350 aeroplanes. Upon completion, the facility will expand from one to two fully flexible bays, enabling more complex and detailed maintenance work to be carried out.
The expansion of the Cardiff maintenance base forms part of the airline’s transformation plan, which was announced in March this year and described by Chairman and CEO Sean Doyle as “a transformation programme that will see us invest £7 billion over the next two years to revolutionise our business.”
BAMC can currently service only A777 and 787 aircraft. With this new investment, the facility will expand to include a bay large enough for A350 planes. British Airways owns 13 A350-1000 aircraft and plans to upgrade its maintenance hub with versatile bays capable of handling more complex and detailed maintenance tasks through this investment.
The expansion will begin in 2025 and is expected to be completed by 2026. The project is an important boost for the Welsh economy as it provides livelihood for 480 people from the community. It highlights British Airways' dedication to continuing and growing its operations based in Cardiff for the long term. The improvements at BAMC are also expected to positively impact the availability and scheduling of British Airways reward flights.
Andy Best, Chief Technological Officer, British Airways, said, “Our Welsh engineering base is an integral part of our maintenance operation, and this investment, as part of our wider maintenance strategy, will ensure that British Airways Engineering Wales continues to play a key role for many years to come. The expanded facility provides us with greater flexibility and control over our Heavy Maintenance activity on both the Boeing and Airbus long-haul fleets, ensuring more efficient planning and execution.”
Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Welsh Government, said, “This is very welcome news from British Airways, paving the way for further growth at their Cardiff site and its highly skilled workforce. This announcement once again demonstrates the vital role that Cardiff Airport plays in bringing investment into Wales and in growing our aerospace maintenance, repair and overhaul sector, where we see continued international interest.”
This multimillion-pound investment marks BAMC's 30th anniversary and reinforces British Airways' longstanding global reputation for providing high-quality and reliable maintenance services.
