British Airways is expanding its network from Southampton Airport with the launch of summer flights to two new European destinations.

Introduced in May of this year, these new routes will depart to Bergerac in France and Majorca in Spain. The flights will be operated by BA CityFlyer and start from £180 to Majorca and from £136 to Bergerac. This expansion adds to the existing routes from Southampton to Faro, Malaga, Edinburgh, Dublin, and seasonal flights to Chambery.

Traditionally centred at London Heathrow, British Airways seems to be making strategic moves to improve connectivity from regional airports and provide more convenient travel options for passengers outside of London.

Read on to learn more about what this means and how utilising our Avios points calculator and BA flight finder tool can help you make the most of these new routes.

About Southampton Airport

Located in Eastleigh, Hampshire, Southampton Airport is steadily growing in importance as a regional hub in the UK. The airport serves as a gateway for travellers in the South of England, reducing the need for journeys to larger, more congested airports like London Heathrow or Gatwick. It’s also becoming an increasingly popular choice for travellers thanks to its efficient operations and passenger-friendly facilities.

British Airways seems to have recognised the strategic value of Southampton Airport, especially through its BA CityFlyer operations. The addition of new routes to Bergerac and Majorca is an indication of this. These flights join existing routes to popular destinations such as Faro and Malaga in Portugal and Spain respectively. BA also offers flights to Chambery during the winter season to cater to ski enthusiasts heading to the French Alps. The airport also connects passengers to Edinburgh and Dublin, providing key links to Scotland and Ireland.

Bergerac as a Destination

With British Airways now offering direct flights from Southampton, it's time to discover why this little corner of France should be on your travel radar.

Bergerac might not be as well-known as Paris or Nice, but that's part of its charm. The town is home to vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see, with each step bringing you closer to a glass of the region's finest. No visit to Bergerac is complete without indulging in its exceptional wine tours and tastings, particularly those showcasing wines from the Monbazillac and Pécharmant appellations. Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the rich flavours and history behind each bottle.

Steeped in history, the town of Bergerac is itself a delight to explore, with cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and busy markets. Visitors can walk through the old town, visit the Musée du Tabac to learn about the region’s tobacco heritage, or simply enjoy the café culture and watch the world go by.

For a change of pace, hop on a boat and glide down the Dordogne River. As you float by, you can take in the scenic beauty of rolling hills, ancient chateaux, and charming villages that dot the riverbanks. It’s a great way to experience the ambiance of the French countryside.

Majorca as a Destination

The largest of Spain's Balearic Islands, Majorca is a favourite among British travellers for a reason. The island is full of charming villages like Deià and Valldemossa which have inspired artists and writers for generations.

You can start your day at Palma Cathedral (a Gothic masterpiece that dominates the skyline), not just for a quick photo but to feel the weight of centuries beneath your feet. Walk through the backstreets of Palma and find a cosy café to sip on something strong and Spanish. The vibe here is electric yet laid-back.

Next, you’re off to the Tramuntana Mountains for the views and the thrill of hiking trails that twist and turn through landscapes that look like they’ve jumped off a postcard. You might end up at a hidden waterfall or a tiny village that feels like it’s straight out of a fairy tale. For a truly unique experience, explore the island’s caves, such as the famous Cuevas del Drach, which feature an underground lake.

The local cuisine is a mix of traditional Spanish flavours and island-specific delicacies. Feast on a hearty tumbet (a vegetable and meat dish), fresh seafood, or a sweet ensaïmada pastry. Wash it all down with a glass of locally produced wine or a chilled cerveza, and you’ve got the perfect evening.

As for beaches, you’ve got your popular spots like Palma Nova, but Majorca’s charm lies in its quieter corners. Find a secluded cove, lay down your towel, and let the world fade away. And let's not forget the nightlife. From sophisticated beach clubs and rooftop bars to pulsating nightclubs, the island knows how to party.
