How Many Reward Seats Does BA Guarantee?

When it comes to redeeming Avios points for flights, the golden ticket—quite literally—is finding that elusive reward seat availability. If you’re calculating how many Avios points for a flight, you’re in luck. British Airways has recently increased the number of guaranteed reward seats across short and long-haul Economy and Business Class cabins and added a minimum number of guaranteed reward flight seats in World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy), making it easier than ever to book that dream trip.

Here's the complete lowdown.

When booking opens 355 days before departure dates, at least 14 reward flight seats on long-haul flights are released. On short-haul flights, at least 12 reward seats are released. These are the seats you can book with absolute certainty if you're quick enough to grab them as soon as they're available. British Airways claims to have added an additional 250,000 Avios reward flights to its inventory since May 2021. BA Redemption Finder has checked and can confirm that BA has indeed increased availability on flights. This makes sense since an empty seat is an expensive seat to fly for any airline.

There is still no guarantee of First Class reward seat availability. Nonetheless, BA Redemption Finder data shows that First Class seats are being made available to purchase as reward flights in far greater numbers than we typically saw pre-pandemic, particularly to long-haul destinations, including The Caribbean and Asia.

More Avios points spending opportunities

Reward Flights typically offer the best value for money when it comes to calculating how many Avios for a flight. In fact, the greatest savings compared to cash-equivalent prices are to be found when redeeming Avios for long-haul air tickets in premium cabin classes. However, the historical challenge has always been finding sufficient availability of seats, which can be booked with Avios, on the right dates, for the right number of seats. With BA’s current number of guaranteed reward flight seats, this should become less of an issue.

It’s worth noting that the “guaranteed” number of seats, bookable as reward flights, is not the same as the total number of available reward flight seats. BA has always released an initial batch of “guaranteed” reward flight seats, on each flight, 355 days before departure, then subsequently released more reward flight seats, up to the departure date, depending on forecast sales of tickets bought with cash. However, the guaranteed number of seats favour those who like the certainty of booking in advance, want to book flights that tend to sell out quickly or can only travel on specific dates.

How Reward Seats Benefit Different Types of Travellers

For Families

When it comes to family travel, snagging reward seats for every member can often feel like finding a needle in a haystack. British Airways makes this less challenging by offering a guaranteed number of reward seats on various routes. So, whether it's an annual family holiday or a spur-of-the-moment getaway, families have a more predictable way to book tickets for everyone in their group.

For Couples

Navigating the world of reward seats as a couple can be challenging, especially when juggling multiple schedules and preferences. British Airways offers a guaranteed number of reward seats that makes planning a romantic getaway or an adventure trip a whole lot smoother. For those who hold a British Airways American Express card, this guarantee also simplifies redeeming Companion Vouchers. Now couples can easily secure two tickets for the number of points usually required for just one seat.
