Revolut has recently entered the rewards market with the launch of its first loyalty program, RevPoints. The program allows customers to earn points through everyday spending, extending the perks typically associated with credit cards to Revolut's debit card users. The best part? You can swap these points for Avios!

In this blog, we’ll examine the program in detail and analyse whether it’s worth it to increase your Avios balance and help you book your dream Avios reward seats.

What are RevPoints?

RevPoints are the currency of Revolut's new loyalty program, designed to reward you for your everyday spending. As you use your Revolut card for purchases across Europe, you accumulate points that can be exchanged for a variety of perks, including travel discounts, airline miles, and more.

Whether you’re paying for your morning coffee, shopping online, or covering your utility bills, each transaction gets you closer to your next reward.

How to Earn RevPoints

Earning RevPoints is straightforward. Use your Revolut card for everyday purchases anywhere in Europe. The more you spend, the more points you collect. It’s that simple.

Revolut offers a tiered card system. Here’s how you can earn RevPoints across the different card types:

  • Standard (Free): Start earning without any monthly fee. You’ll accumulate one RevPoint for every £10 spent using your card. It’s a simple, cost-effective way to begin collecting points.
  • Plus (£3.99 per month): Upgrade to the Plus plan to maintain the same earning rate of one point per £10 spent, but with a perk: receive a 1,500 RevPoints bonus when you spend £2,000 within the first three months of upgrading.
  • Premium (£7.99 per month): For more frequent spenders, the Premium card quadruples your earning potential, granting one RevPoint for every £4 spent. Plus, you get a 2,500 RevPoints bonus for the same £2,000 spend in the first three months after your upgrade.
  • Metal (£14.99 per month): The Metal card is ideal for heavy spenders. It offers one RevPoint for every £2 spent. You'll also receive 5,000 RevPoints bonus after spending £2,000 in the first three months.
  • Ultra (£45 per month): The pinnacle of Revolut’s offerings, the Ultra card, maximises your earnings at one RevPoint per £1 spent. New Ultra subscribers get a massive 10,000 RevPoints bonus when spending £2,000 within the first three months, which adjusts to 5,000 RevPoints if upgrading from the Metal card.

Revolut also offers bonuses for new and upgrading customers:

  • New Customers: Anyone new to Revolut and opting for any card type receives a welcoming bonus of 3,000 RevPoints after making 150 eligible transactions.
  • Upgrading Customers: If you decide to upgrade from a lower-tier card to a higher one, Revolut rewards your commitment with up to 10,000 bonus points if you meet its spending requirements.

Activating RevPoints

To start earning RevPoints, you’ll need to activate the feature in your Revolut app. This is a quick process: simply navigate to the RevPoints section under the ‘Rewards’ tab and follow the prompts to turn on the feature. Activation is essential to start accumulating points, so make sure you don’t skip this step.

Redeeming RevPoints

You can convert RevPoints into miles with over 30 airline loyalty programs, including British Airways Executive Club. This allows you to leverage your Revolut spending to earn Avios. These points can help you book flights with Avios and enjoy upgrades and access to premium cabins, or even cover taxes and fees on Avios reward seats (more on that in the next section).

Your RevPoints aren't limited to just air travel. You can also use them for exclusive accommodation deals and a variety of travel discounts:

  • Hotel Stays: Redeem your points for discounts on hotel bookings to make your stay more affordable.
  • Car Rentals: Save on car rentals and explore your destination without worrying about high rental costs.
  • Leisure Activities: Enjoy discounts on activities and experiences, such as guided tours, theme park tickets, and more.
  • Fashion and Retail: Use your points for discounts and special offers with brands like French Connection.
  • Beauty and Skincare: Redeem points for products from top skincare brands like Dermalogica.
  • Dining and Entertainment: Enjoy discounts at restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues, making your everyday outings more rewarding.

RevPoints – The Verdict

So, can RevPoints help you book flights with Avios? They can, but it may take longer to accumulate enough points compared to credit card programs.

When considering RevPoints alongside other loyalty programs like American Express, the most notable difference is that RevPoints are earned through debit card spending. This means you can accumulate points without the need for credit checks or concerns about debt, which can be a major advantage for many users.

While British Airways American Express credit cards are popular among frequent flyers for its higher Avios earning rate, not everyone meets the credit eligibility to qualify for an Amex card. High credit score requirements and stringent approval processes can be barriers for many potential users, including younger individuals, those new to credit, or those with less-than-perfect credit histories. Some people may also prefer to avoid the potential pitfalls of credit card debt and high interest rates associated with credit card usage.

Revolut offers a more accessible option for a broader range of consumers to earn travel rewards. Since RevPoints are earned through debit card spending, there's no need for a credit check, making it easier for a wider audience to participate.

However, the earning rate with Revolut is lower, at just one Avios for every £10 spent, compared to the British Airways American Express card, which typically offers one point per pound spent. This means that if your primary goal is to maximise your Avios accrual, the British Airways American Express card might still be the more efficient option for you.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your personal circumstances and travel goals. Consider factors like eligibility, spending patterns, and the specific benefits each card offers to determine which option aligns best with your needs.
