Picture this - you're soaring through the skies, miles above the earth, a cocktail in one hand, a great novel in the other. You're enjoying the unparalleled satisfaction of a BA reward flight, but there's something else that's making your journey even more enjoyable. You're flying sustainably. That's right, your trip is a part of British Airway's ambitious "Better World" programme, designed to make air travel more eco-friendly.

Air travel, as we know it, contributes significantly to carbon emissions globally. It's a sticky wicket, and airlines around the world are now feeling the heat to bring about sustainable changes. However, it takes commitment, vision, and a meticulous roadmap to tread the path of sustainability, and not every airline is up for the challenge.

British Airways, however, seems to be rising to the occasion with the launch of its new initiative, BA Better World, which puts sustainability at the heart of its operations. With a clear target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the airline has chalked out a roadmap, laying out short, medium, and long-term initiatives.

Let’s dig deeper into what the programme is all about so you can use your British Airways Avios for a more sustainable travel experience while enjoying your BA reward flights.

Short-term Initiatives

British Airways’ short-term initiatives include investing in more efficient aircraft. They retired their entire fleet of Boeing 747s years earlier than planned, opting instead for new, modern aircraft that are far gentler on the planet - these new kids on the tarmac consume up to 40% less fuel. It's like swapping out an old gas guzzler for a shiny new hybrid.

The airline is also putting considerable resources into carbon offset projects designed to tackle emissions from UK domestic flights. These initiatives include planting trees to balance out carbon dioxide produced elsewhere.

More importantly, their short-term strategy involves the introduction of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) derived from waste feedstocks. By harnessing these innovative fuels, the airline is essentially recycling waste into power for their flights. It's a revolutionary approach that helps close the loop on waste and energy.

Innovating for Tomorrow

Looking towards the medium and long-term, BA’s plans include continued investment in the development and large-scale application of first-of-its-kind SAF plants in the UK and the US to scale up the availability of this eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. The company recognises that making these fuels more accessible and affordable is key to driving the wider aviation industry towards sustainability. They’re leading the charge by becoming the first European airline group to commit to powering 10% of its flights with SAF by 2030.

The airline is also exploring growth and innovation in new technologies that strengthen overall sustainability. Imagine aircraft powered entirely by hydrogen, producing zero emissions. Consider the potential of carbon capture technology, actively removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. These are not just flights of fancy, but serious explorations into what the future of air travel could look like. A staggering $865 million have been dedicated to SAF purchases and investments, demonstrating IAG's commitment to a more sustainable future.

Quieting Down Air Travel

British Airways' parent company, the International Airlines Group (IAG) is not only making a substantial commitment to sustainable fuels but is also setting a precedent when it comes to reducing noise pollution. In an effort to make skies more serene and less intrusive for communities living near airports, BA has made significant strides in reducing aircraft noise. Since 2015, they've managed to decrease the roar of their planes by more than 10% per flight.

This commitment to quieter skies is exemplified by the Airbus A320neo, a newer addition to the fleet. This aircraft produces half the noise footprint area of its predecessors, making it a more neighbour-friendly choice for those overflights.

Getting Passengers Involved

Customer involvement is also a key part of BA's sustainability plan. In January 2020, the airline launched CO2Llaborate, an online platform allowing customers to offset the emissions from their flights. Available via the airline’s air portal, travellers can offset emissions, and purchase SAF, or carbon removal credits directly from their seats.

This initiative hands passengers the reins to their own carbon footprint, transforming them from mere travellers to active participants in BA's journey towards a more sustainable future.

Ground Control

The airline’s sustainability efforts don't stop at the aircraft door. On the ground, BA is moving away from diesel and introducing renewable-powered electric pushback vehicles as well as lighter trollies on their aircraft. By reducing the aircraft weight, they're ensuring that even the smallest measures add up to make a significant difference in their emission output.

Their fleet of eco-friendly, emissions-free pushback vehicles is powered by Heathrow’s 100% renewable electricity supply, underscoring their commitment to leveraging renewable energy sources. Plus, the aircraft on the stand and Mototok pushback tugs are juiced up by wind power.

Electrifying Innovations

The company is even trialling a state-of-the-art fully electric passenger bus at Heathrow, which uses 75% less energy. Other services being trialled include a new electric toilet service truck and HVO fuel, which is being tested in five other airport vehicles. HVO, or hydrotreated vegetable oil, reduces emissions by up to 90% and is one of the cleanest fuels out there.

Empowering the Crew

Central to British Airways' sustainability efforts is the belief that everyone within the organisation has a role to play. Recognising this, the airline has made significant strides in empowering its crew with tools and knowledge to make more eco-conscious decisions.

In February 2022, BA introduced an innovative tool - the Fuel Dashboards for Captains, which acts as a personal fitness tracker. However, instead of tracking steps or heart rate, it monitors fuel efficiency. The dashboards provide captains with real-time data about their flight's fuel usage.

With this information on hand, captains can track fuel consumption patterns, identify areas of potential wastage, and make data-driven decisions to optimise efficiency. This is an empowering step that underscores the importance of individual actions within the collective effort towards sustainability.

Beyond Emissions

Sustainability isn't just about fuel and emissions. BA is also focusing on reducing waste. In today's digital era, where screens have become our go-to for everything from news to novels, the airline has taken a step forward and converted its inflight magazine and flight manuals to digital versions. Not only does this make for a seamless, modern flight experience, but it also significantly reduces paper waste, a win-win in anyone's book.

But the company acknowledges that paper can't be completely eliminated. From boarding passes to luggage tags, some elements of air travel still rely on the humble sheet. But even here, BA is trying to make strides towards sustainability. They've partnered with the Woodland Trust and Print Releaf, organisations dedicated to reforestation. This means every piece of paper that British Airways uses helps to replant forests, effectively offsetting its paper footprint.

It seems like British Airways isn't just hoping for a better world, but actively creating one. As passengers, we get to be a part of this change, and if you’re a British Airways Avios collector, you can contribute to this mission while still being easy on your pocket.
