The Platinum Card from American Express comes with a hefty £575 annual fee in the UK.  Whilst this sounds crazy, it also comes with a host of travel benefits, which means it can make sense for frequent travellers.  But there’s the challenge, right there.  In these pandemic times, few people can travel regularly, giving Amex a conundrum when it comes to their renewal rates.  Furthermore, with a 30,000 welcome reward bonus for new primary cardholders, if they spend enough in the first 6 months, some canny individuals might be considering a primary cardholder swap with their significant other.

So perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Amex has decided to sweeten up its current Platinum carriers with some new treats.

£100 of Statement Credits

First up on the list of goodies are statement credits on your account covering £100 combined spending with Deliveroo, Harvey Nichols, M&S, Waitrose & Partners and the Apple Online Store (UK), between now and  27 August 2020.

To clarify, when you spend up to £100, cumulatively, in any combination, across these five sellers, you get the money back in statement credits of up to £100 per card.

So What’s the Catch?

Well, firstly you HAVE to enrol, you won’t get the credit otherwise.  You can do this on the Amex website or app and if you have The Platinum Card, you should have received an email with the link to enrol too.  It seems a few cardholders haven’t received the offer by email.  If you haven’t, it’s worth checking online to see if you have the link to register in the “offers” tab on your account statement page or app.

There are some exclusions too.  The most important ones are:

  • It only applies to spend settled in GBP on the card to which the offer is saved
  • Department store concession spend won’t qualify
  • M&S qualifying spend excludes bank and energy services, foreign currency exchange, opticians and petrol stations.
  • Waitrose qualifying spend excludes Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery School, foreign currency and website gift section spend.
  • Harvey Nichols qualifying spend excludes international delivery, gift cards, vouchers and restaurant dining.
  • Apple Store spend excludes non-UK store spend, Apple iTunes, Apps, Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards.
  • Spend made using third-party payment aggregators also does not qualify, so use your card directly, not a service like PayPal.

Interestingly M&S Gift Cards don’t seem to be excluded currently, so you could in theory buy a gift card, get the statement credit, then spend the money at your leisure.  Similarly, Waitrose gift cards can be used in John Lewis stores and on their website.

It isn’t clear if new cardholders will get this offer, but for existing card holders it seems an absolute no-brainer to enrol for this promotion.

Higher Membership Rewards

American Express has also been emailing Platinum (and Centurion) cardholders to remind them that their earning rate for Membership Rewards has been temporarily doubled.

The earn rate of Membership Rewards was one point for every one pound spent. However, for holders of The Platinum Card, it will be two points for every one pound spent, until 20 July 2020. This change is automatic and doesn’t require members to register for the offer.

Don’t forget, one Membership Rewards point can be exchanged for one Avios, so this is a useful perk for frustrated travellers, trying to earn points towards their next reward flight.

Of course, Rewardflightfinder.com is here to help Platinum cardholders relieve their no flying frustration, with the best tools to find Avios reward flights on British Airways, for later this year and beyond.
